Meeting the Needs of Older Passengers with Vision Loss: Guidance for Transportation Providers

Developed with transportation providers in mind, a new guide from NADTC and the American Foundation for the Blind provides resources and information on understanding aging and vision loss, possible solutions to transportation challenges, travel training and orientation and what transportation providers can do to better serve older riders with vision loss. A companion training resource for drivers is also available on our website.

ICYMI: December 7, Jess Mauer, Executive Director of the Maine Council on Aging, presented the importance of using language that is sensitive to diverse populations when doing outreach and advertising transportation programs. Our December 1st Office Hours featured Byran Simpson, Veteran Travel Trainer at Rouge Valley Transportation District, who presented on connecting Veterans to transportation options, and provided key strategies to improve mobility issues affecting Veterans when accessing healthcare. Public transportation intersects almost every form of human trafficking and we all play a vital role in stopping it. Busing on the Lookout (BOTL) is a national organization offering free industry specific training, toolkits or materials, and has been used by over 245 transit agencies to provide additional training to their staff. Suicide events on public transit have been increasing, and FTA has released a Safety Advisory to encourage an increased use of suicide prevention signage, posting hotline or crisis center information on vehicles and in transit facilities to assist those in need. The sixth annual AARP Community Challenge will be released in January 2023! This opportunity seeks to create vibrant places, deliver a range of transportation and mobility options, support affordable housing, ensure DEI is considered in built and social environments, and support community or civic engagement to leverage funding options. Transit Standards Development Program: The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) released a NOFO to provide up to $3 million to perform a detailed industry assessment and develop standards, best practices, guidance, and tools in safety and other areas to address the needs and demands within the transit industry. Proposals will be accepted through January 2023.
