The NCAA college basketball tournament, affectionately known as “March Madness” is right around the corner. Seeing these teams compete and show endless energy and excitement is amazing.

So how does this relate to advisory boards? Well, an advisory board is a team of highly motivated and accomplished professionals who exert hours of energy and work behind the scenes. They work closely with their local academies and provide winning solutions for educators and students; see a few of our amazing results, and highlights of great teamwork:

Teamwork in Action

Recently, Experience Grand Rapids brought a delegation of educators from Michigan to meet with the Miami-Dade school district to learn about successful Academies of Hospitality & Tourism and associated advisory boards.

The group visited the Academy of Hospitality & Tourism Advisory Board Meeting, a few AOHT academies, the Miami Culinary Institute/Miami Dade College, Miami Marriott Biscayne Bay, and Florida International University’s Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management.

Raleigh Advisory Board Convening

NAF will be hosting a professional development convening for advisory board members and partners in North Carolina. The event will have panel discussions, small group exercises, and breakout sessions on work-based learning, board organization, and sustainability.

The event will be held at Fidelity Investments in Durham on April 17 from 8:30am to 1:00pm. Snacks and lunch will be provided through an in-kind donation from Fidelity Investments.

AOHS Pathway, Partnership with AAMC

NAF and the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) have formed a promising partnership to focus on early career health pathways. The AAMC works closely with medical schools, teaching hospitals, and research institutions and they provide resources for the MCAT exam and medical school applications.

NAF and AAMC have produced a new “Medical Careers Expedition” project-based learning unit that will be released to the NAF network in April. Academies of Health Sciences, stay tuned for more information.

Student Highlights & Opportunities

Congratulations to the Detroit area students who completed the first stage of the FutureEd Pathfinder challenge using KnoPro. Over 70 NAF students are working in small teams to develop new ideas about career education in their region. Check back next month to hear about the finalists and the final innovation competition.

Advisory Board Champion Award Nominations
