From NAFI HQ
Inspiring Higher Quality Education and Training
Greetings, fellow aviators! This is George Charles Allen, transmitting and receiving over NAFI eMentor. As the newest addition to NAFI’s board of directors, I have been asked to share a few words with fellow members while I settle into my new role.
I am thrilled for the opportunity to serve you during this exciting and transformative era. As articulated during this week’s Open House, NAFI is entering a new phase of development with a compelling vision for the future.
We face a daunting challenge when it comes to perception of the industry and retaining learner pilots and flight instructors alike. According to a 2017 FAA Aviation Rule Making Committee Report, the need for pilots has created a powerful vacuum in the flight training ecosystem leading to a 90 percent annual CFI turnover. Compare this to a 2011 AOPA study which revealed a staggering 80 percent attrition rate among learner pilots, of which at least 35 percent indicated a lack of CFI professionalism as a key reason for their exodus. AOPA added that “the quality of instruction is a persistent issue and a weak link in the chain.” Combined, these numbers are disconcerting.
Together, we can change this trend. We can change the conversation, the mindset, and shape the narrative. The seeds are planted at the earliest level of education and training. Primacy is powerful and lasting. As aviation educators, we are vanguards of transformation at every flight level.
We must collectively find a way to bridge the talent gap and inspire a higher quality of education, training, and prestige in the industry while significantly bolstering the ranks of general aviation with pilots trained by enthusiastic teachers and ambassadors. We don’t just need more CFIs — we need impassioned CFIs who feel valued and respected for the professionals they are.
As a full-time flight school owner and professional CFI, I have stumbled, struggled, studied, and strived to build my own pathway into an industry I knew nothing about. After 12 years into this fascinating journey, I have become intimately familiar with just how many hours of work, dedication, and sacrifice are needed to hone our craft to a professional caliber. Yet I refuse to use difficulty as a rubric. My route certainly could have been simpler had I been armed with the hard-won knowledge I only now possess. We must not sacrifice the quality of education, however, while we broaden the road to success.
I am proud to represent NAFI today as an ambassador of education. Let's work together to help NAFI become the trim tab of the aviation industry: one that steers us toward a brighter future. Until next time, blue skies and tailwinds!

NAFI PDC Seeks Volunteers
It's that time again — EAA AirVenture Oshkosh and the NAFI Professional Development Center will be here before you know it.
This year, the NAFI Professional Development Center (PDC) will have many new ways to learn, network, save, and win!
To make this happen, we need volunteers to assist in running the tent and coordinating the programs. If you're interested in getting involved, click here for the NAFI 2022 Professional Development Center Volunteer Application.
Watch the NAFI Open House Recording
For those of you who joined our Open House event on May 25, thank you for your patience as we worked through a technical problem with our broadcast facility. Our team enjoyed making their presentations and giving you a look inside NAFI. The broadcast was recorded, and we encourage all of you to watch the event at your convenience. Please share the link with your friends and colleagues who may not yet be NAFI members. We intend to have more events in the future to engage with and learn from our membership. Watch here.

EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2022 Notice Released
With the annual EAA AirVenture Oshkosh fly-in convention around the corner, the organization has released the notice covering arrival and departure procedures for those flying to the show. EAA highlighted that the document features several changes this year starting with an official name change from a Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) to a Notice by the FAA. Other changes include decommissioned VORs, RFD, and MBL, changes to several IFR routings and aircraft camping no longer being allowed at Appleton International Airport. More here.

FAA Drone Safety Day June 18
The FAA is inviting the drone community to be part of its 2022 Drone Safety Day campaign on Saturday, June 18. This year’s campaign will be a one-day national event to encourage drone pilots and recreational flyers to “Fly RIGHT.” More here.
FlightSafety to Train Cargo Drone Pilots
FlightSafety International reached an agreement to develop a state-of-the-art training program for the unmanned air vehicle pilots of Dronamics, the Bulgaria-based unmanned cargo airline. FlightSafety also hopes to expand the agreement to include training for Dronamics maintenance and dispatch personnel. Dronamics was started in 2014 and the company has announced partnerships with DHL and Hellmann for same-day, middle-mile cargo delivery services in Europe and Australia. Ambitions for the future include becoming the first long-range cargo drone airline. More here.

AOPA Joins Canadian ADS-B Pushback
An aviation industry coalition voiced concern to Transport Canada about elements of a proposed mandate that will require aircraft flying in Canada to be 1090ES ADS-B-equipped in two phases over the next four to five years. The proposed mandate will also require antennas capable of communicating with both ground-based and space-based transceivers. The United States currently utilizes ground-based ADS-B stations, which are confined to line-of-sight reception between the aircraft and ground receivers. Space-based ADS-B does not have this limitation, but requires antennas on top of the aircraft to provide the required fidelity to allow for air traffic separation. More here.
Alaska Airlines Pilots Authorize Strike if Talks Fail
Alaska Airlines pilots have voted to authorize a future strike if current contract negotiations with management and federal mediation efforts fail. Following an informational picket in April by 1,500 off-duty pilots, the vote may increase pressure on Alaska Airlines management to come to a contract settlement. The union has been stalled for years trying to negotiate a contract that addresses work rules, scheduling flexibility, and career security.

FAA Testing Solar-Powered Airfield Lighting Solutions
The FAA is testing solar-powered airfield lighting at Penn Yan Airport in the Finger Lakes region of New York. Solar lighting products have the potential to provide standard levels of lighting at airports without connecting to the electrical grid, reducing an airport’s overall carbon footprint and making it possible to equip an airfield that would otherwise have little to no lighting. The new lighting systems must be able to deliver the standard light output, in terms of photometrics such as colors and intensities for the necessary duration, solely through solar energy. More here.
Airbus to Open Hydrogen Tech Development Center in UK
Airbus will open a Zero Emission Development Center (ZEDC) in Filton, UK, to advance technologies such as a cost-effective cryogenic fuel system for its ZeroE hydrogen-powered airliners now under development. The UK ZEDC will benefit from the recent commitment by the UK government to guarantee £685 million of funding to the Aerospace Technology Institute over the next three years to support the development of zero-carbon and low-emission aircraft. Airbus’s ZeroE program engineers have begun the development of a narrowbody-class, hydrogen-powered aircraft scheduled for entry into service in 2035.
