Last year, dozens of activities and events in more than 24 states across the country brought together civic leaders, artists, musicians, civic leaders, teachers, librarians and students of all ages.
Please visit www.dayofracialhealing.org for information about a special live streamed event being hosted by visionary Ava DuVernay at 1:00 pm PT, Jan. 22 and for resources and ideas for hosting an event in your own community.

Format: Webinar
Hosted by The Lucile Packard Foundation for Children's Health
Health care providers and systems serving children, youth and families increasingly focus on family engagement as a strategy to improve health care delivery, enhance consumer and provider satisfaction, and reduce costs. Assessing how well an organization or agency is engaging families is a critical step in achieving these goals. A recent issue brief from Family Voices,
A Framework for Assessing Family Engagement in Systems Change
, proposes four domains of family engagement - representation, transparency, impact and commitment. Presenters will explore this framework, share models of success and discuss common barriers to incorporating meaningful family engagement in systems-level initiatives.

Format: Webinar
Hosted by Education Week
Whatever the educational challenge -- improving assessments, personalizing learning environments, or advancing equity -- public thinking plays a role in the solution. And the way the issue is framed for the public has a big effect on levels of support and engagement in the issue.
How can educators and advocates decide where to start, what to emphasize, and what to leave unsaid when explaining new initiatives to the community? Julie Sweetland of the FrameWorks Institute will tackle these questions and more using evidence gathered from studies that queried more than 40,000 Americans nationwide. Click here to register.

West Virginia unveiled a campaign
this year for 60 percent of adults ages 25 to 64 to have earned a degree or certificate by 2030. But in McDowell County,
just 38%
of recent high school graduates sought more education, well below the statewide rate of 55%. To increase those numbers, the district is sending teachers directly to kids' homes - including high schoolers' - to counsel, persuade and cajole them to graduate on time and plan for their future. "We wanted to make our home visits different," said Gina Martinez-Keddy, the program's executive director. "We're not coming to judge you, not coming to address a problem that you're having, not coming to report you. We're coming to build a relationship with you because we know that you're an expert on how your child learns, and we as educators can learn a lot from you."

Approximately 60 percent of children in the United States fail to read proficiently by third grade due in part to lack of books in the home and family engagement. An Oklahoma City native and entrepreneur is hoping to help combat that problem by funding an early childhood literacy and family engagement program in Oklahoma City elementary schools that aims to develop long-term reading habits in students. The program, designed by the national nonprofit,
Raising A Reader, is providing training to more than 35 local elementary school teachers as well as an orientation and program materials for parents.
