Please join the North Africa Initiative (NAI) of the Foreign Policy Institute (FPI) at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and the Middle East Institute Switzerland (MEIS) for a conversation on "Countering Human Trafficking and Transnational Crimes in North Africa. This event is meticulously designed to dissect the intricate dynamics of migration and transnational criminal organizations in North Africa, shedding light on the profound challenges that the region currently grapples with.
This conversation will feature Othman Belbeisi, Regional Director for Middle East and North Africa at the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and Alissa Pavia, Associate Director for Rafik Hariri Center & Middle East programs at the Atlantic Council. Our panel experts and policymakers will discuss the underlying factors driving migration; scrutinizing the structure and impact of transnational criminal networks; investigating the intersection of migration, transnational crimes, and human security. Panelists will also evaluate existing policy responses and strategies at the national, regional and international levels, while seeking innovative solutions that safeguard human rights and bolster governance. Discussants will examine as well the status quo of state paralysis, worsening global economic conditions, and structural deficiencies and opportunism that fuels transnational crimes networks.
The event will be moderated by Hafed Al-Ghwell, Senior Fellow and Executive Director of the North Africa Initiative at the SAIS Foreign Policy Institute (FPI) and Andrea Cellino, Senior Non-Resident Fellow Middle East Institute Switzerland, MEIS.
NOTE: This event will be conducted in a hybrid format, allowing attendees to join in-person or via Zoom. Lunch will be provided for in-person attendees.
