Plan for Market Corrections or Crises

Do you have a communications plan in place that’s ready to deploy at any moment in case of a market correction or crisis? I am not simply talking about market commentary. You should certainly communicate market insights if that is the type of information you like to share. But your clients will require something faster and more personal to restore their peace of mind. I recommend that all financial advisors create a communications plan for market corrections or crisis.

It doesn’t need to be overly complicated, but it should answer some basic questions, such as: Who initiates the plan? What does the phone tree look like? Do you know what to say when you call clients? What will you email, and to whom? What will you say on your website? Who is in charge of digital communications? Where is your plan stored? Financial advisors believe in the power of planning, and the same principle applies to your communications efforts.

Retirement Savings: SECURE Act Moving
by Dani Kehoe, Counsel to NAIFA

It was a busy week last week, and the first part of this week will be busy, too. Here’s where we are on our issues as of now.
Retirement Savings: The House Ways & Means Committee unanimously (by voice vote) approved H.R.1994, the SECURE Act—the new version of last year’s Retirement Enhancement Savings Act (RESA). It is now ready for a vote in the full House. The bill includes the open MEP (multiple employer pension plan) provisions that were in the Kind-Kelly bill (H.R.1993) as well as the new safe harbor, annuity, and other provisions (like, for example, the rule that eliminates the age restriction on contributions to traditional IRAs) from “the old RESA.” . Tim Holladay, CLU, CASL, LUTCF, JD, was selected as this year’s winner of the “Herb Morgan Memorial Award” at the NAIFA-Florida Legislative Day on the Hill breakfast on March 19 in Tallahassee. Mike Peters, CLU, ChFC, CASL, the 2018 winner and chair of this year’s selection committee, presented the award to Holladay.

The Morgan Award is presented to the NAIFA-Florida member who exemplifies leadership and support in the areas of advocacy, leadership development, and membership recruitment. Current members of the NAIFA-Florida Board of Directors are not eligible. The award is named after former legislator and former NAIFA-Florida CEO & lobbyist Herb Morgan, who served the association from 1986 until his untimely death in 2003.

Holladay’s love of politics began in college, were he was Junior and Senior Class President, Secretary of State, and President of the Interfraternity Council, as well as President of his fraternity. Tim also served as a student advisor to Georgia Governor Jimmy Carter. More recently, he was appointed chair of the Florida Elections Commission by then-Governor Rick Scott, where he served for four years. Prior to that, Tim served for four years on the Pasco County Citizen’s Advisory Committee.

Tim’s involvement and service to NAIFA is centered locally at NAIFA-North Suncoast, an Affiliate of NAIFA, located in New Port Richey. Tim began moving up the NAIFA-Florida leadership chairs when he was first elected to the Board of Directors and then in 2010-11 was finally elected statewide President. Tim has deep passion for the Political Committee, advocacy, as well as the Leadership in Life Institute (LILI). Has served on the state Political Committee and is currently a Political Committee contributor at the Emissary level. In addition, Tim was the first member of NAIFA’s Congressional Council from Florida. He has served as chair of the Legislative Committee and currently serves as LILI Moderator. To top it off, Tim was honored in 2016 with NAIFA-Florida’s top award – the C.G. Snead / J.F. Bryan, III Memorial Award for Outstanding Service.
