NAMEPA Regions - Houston Gathering | |
We hosted our inaugural regional effort in the dynamic port city of Houston. This gathering proved to be a pivotal event, where stakeholders, leaders, and educators came together to collaboratively identify key insights and initiatives aimed at shaping the future of the maritime industry in the region. The gathering, hosted at the West Gulf Maritime Association, focused on understanding, and enhancing public perception, promoting marine environment protection, and fostering workforce development. | |

Outreach - Houston Schools | |
Throughout our visit in Houston, NAMEPA visited 4 schools: Blanson CTE High School, Texas City High School, The Lawson Academy, Pasadena ISD Maritime. At each school, we delivered presentations on Marine Science and Maritime Careers, engaging with students to discuss actionable steps they can take and providing valuable insights into the industry. Additionally, we distributed NAMEPA's educational materials and resources to both teachers and students, empowering them to further their understanding of maritime topics. | |

National Maritime Week, an extension of the traditional National Maritime Day observed on May 22nd, is a time to recognize and celebrate the significant achievements within the maritime industry. Acknowledging that a single day is not enough to encapsulate the breadth of our industry's advancements and the need for collaboration, a consortium of organizations has united to orchestrate a week-long series of events. This initiative aims to foster unity and propel collective progress within the maritime sector. This year, the celebrations and collaborative efforts will be hosted in Washington, D.C., marking a significant opportunity for professionals, government representatives, and stakeholders to come together in recognition and support of our maritime heritage and future. | |

Brian McMahon High School Career Fair | |

In February, NAMEPA engaged with students at Brian McMahon High School in Norwalk during a maritime career fair. Throughout the day, we conducted intimate group discussions with 50 sophomores, 45 juniors, and 20 seniors, sharing insights into careers in maritime and marine science.
We explored various pathways into the industry, emphasizing the importance of taking proactive steps and building connections. Moreover, we inspired students to take an active role in marine conservation and join us in promoting NAMEPA's mission to #SaveOurSeas. As part of our outreach efforts, we also provided educational materials for further exploration.

Trumbull High School Presentation on Sustainability and Marketing | |
Two weeks later, NAMEPA visited Trumbull High School as guest speakers for their Accounting and Marketing class. Chosen as one of 10 schools in the Long Island Sound Schools Network for their dedication to protecting local watersheds and the global ocean, students were to explore what it means for corporations to integrate ESG, the role of environmental stewardship in marketing and commerce, and how their actions translate to ocean stewardship. Marcela, NAMEPA’s Sustainability Director, and Anika, NAMEPA’s Digital Media Manager, delivered compelling presentations on the essentials of sustainability reporting, and the intersection of sustainability and marketing, respectively, enriching the students' understanding of these critical issues. | |

NAMEPA at the CMA Shipping Expo and Conference 2024 | |
In March, NAMEPA participated in the CMA Shipping event, where we had the pleasure of reconnecting with numerous fellow NAMEPA members and partners. It was a fantastic opportunity to engage with students and forge connections with organizations that share our mission. Additionally, we hosted an exciting raffle giveaway featuring prizes such as NAMEPA golf umbrellas, sustainable Timex watches, and manatee plushies! | |
This year, we launched our Sea Safety Series webinars, aligning with the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) focus on safety. Our first session, titled “Navigational Hazards: Challenges and Solutions,” delved into the critical topics of technology advancements, training protocols, and maritime regulations. This comprehensive approach aimed to address the complexities of navigational hazards, enhancing safety and compliance within the maritime sector. Speakers included Captain Robert E. Hughes, Chief Commercial Officer at McAllister Towing and Tony Smith, Vice President - Principal Surveyor at The American P&I Club. | |
