Industry Challenges and Opportunities for Decarbonization and Digitalization, Explored at NAMEPA Marine Operations Program
NAMEPA welcomed representatives from industry, the USCG and students to its annual Marine Operations Seminar in Houston last month. The Houston Pilots Association hosted the event at their corporate headquarters in Deer Park and provided tours of their facility.

The program revolved around decarbonization and digitalization with the discussion focusing on how to navigate the road ahead. Setting the stage for this dialog was RDML John Mauger, Assistant Commandant for Prevention Policy, USCG who gave an overview from the regulatory standpoint. Keith LeTourneau of Blank Rome provided an overview. . . Safety at Sea Seminar & AMVER and Benkert Awards
Not since the end of World War II has the role of shipping in geopolitics been so critical. With it comes human, environmental, and corporate risks. 

Join industry colleagues to participate in the discussion of “Safety at Sea” in these turbulent times. We will also be presenting the USCG’s prestigious Benkert Awards for environmental excellence and AMVER’s Awards recognizing industry participation for voluntary rescue at sea.

Marine Science & Maritime Industry:
A Cadet's Experience
While with NAMEPA I was given the opportunity to travel to Houston, TX in February to attend the Marine Operations Conference along with presenting to four different schools on Maritime Industry Careers and Marine Science Careers. We landed in Houston and hit the ground running heading straight to The Lawson Academy to present to their 8th grade class. Here we talked with them about their careers and they showed an interest in the Maritime Academies and what my time has been like at the Academy. They were engaged in the different activities that we had for them and got to learn more about what they are doing.

The next morning, we traveled to La Porte High School in La Porte Texas. Here we presented in their Logistics and Shipping class in the CTE section of the high school. We presented to three different classes during the morning. Many of these did not know of the opportunities that the Maritime Industry has to offer. MARAD Centers of Excellence: Exploring the US Maritime Administration’s Centers of Excellence Program
MPSEC was delighted to partner with Tall Ships America to explore the CoE program. We heard from Gerard Wall, the Centers of Excellence for Domestic Maritime Workforce Training and Education Program Manager for the US Maritime Administration’s Office of Maritime Labor and Training, Captain Sarah Hirsch, Captain Jonathan Kabak, and Captain Aaron Singh with moderation by Carleen Lyden Walker. . . Massachusetts Maritime Academy Cooperative Education

Winter 2022 Cadets: Megan, Fionn, & William
NAMEPA was excited to welcome our Mass. Maritime Cooperative Education interns; Megan, Fionn, and William. Each cadet supported NAMEPA's mission to Save Our Seas throughout their co-op.

Megan had the opportunity to work on our Education and Outreach initiatives by visiting Houston, TX to attend NAMEPA's Marine Operations Seminar and engage with schools in the Houston Independent School District. While there, she shared her experience as a cadet and the that encouraged students to investigate the pathways to careers in marine science and maritime industry. Megan also developed NAMEPA chapter materials and helped create our PODS for grades 6-8 spring outreach.

As a student studying international maritime business, Fionn supported our team on NAMEPA's unique CSR/ESG program along with database management. Fionn also developed NAMEPA's Maritime Monday posts to reflect current industry news. His experience was what he referred to as an opportunity to apply what he's learned in the classroom.

William connected maritime institutions to NAMEPA resources by engaging with primary and secondary schools in the United States. His research included determining stakeholders and help build the Maritime Primary and Secondary Education Coalition community. This including engaging with maritime schools and stakeholders on the value of MPSEC as a resource for students, educators, and industry members.
