What's the Story? Talking About Mental Health
|
|
As we celebrate Mental Health Awareness Month, let's remember that while May is a great time to start a conversation, mental health is part of our lives: 24/7, 365 days a year. It's always a good time to discuss our mental well-being, especially if you or a loved one are struggling. Talking can help!
That's not to say conversations about mental health are easy. The good news is, more people than ever are willing to try; and like many things in life, young people are showing us the way by being more open to conversations than other generations, even as youth struggle at a disproportionate rate. Yet, the candid truth is, talking about mental health can be tricky -- especially for non-clinicians who might know mental health basics, but who are not equipped (and should not attempt) to provide diagnoses or treatments, which should come from clinicians. NAMI is about support -- because well-informed, caring support is powerful.
To help our advocates talk about mental health -- to a friend or to a crowd -- NAMI Illinois has added a Speaker Resources section to our website. Tips for Talking about Mental Health to consolidate practical tips about language, tone, and 'what-fi' scenarios, like what to do if a person shares a crisis situation. Mental Health Facts and Figures provides statistics that strengthen advocacy for increased access to care. In addition, the sheet contains data points about the lasting effects of COVID-19 on mentaI illness as well as lllinois-specific disparities for rural, youth, and workforce constituencies. The NAMI Mental Health Awareness Partners Kit from our national office also has a range of suggestions and tools.
Maybe you do too. If you are interested in sharing your story or getting more involved, please email NAMI@namiillinois.org to tell us about your interests or needs, or visit our website to find and contact your local NAMI Affiliate directly.

Meet NAMI Illinois - Dr. Mauricio Cifuentes!
|
|
Who is NAMI Illinois, anyway? As the statewide NAMI organization, we're mainly known for behind-the-scenes support of our 19 local affiliates, our statewide conference, virtual support groups, legislative advocacy, and strategic work to advance equity and inclusion.
But it's people who make things happens. Over the past year, several new board Directors have joined with our longstanding leader to expand our base of expertise and relationships. Over the next year, we'll profile the new leaders, longstanding stalwarts, and innovative affiliates who make "NAMI in Illinois" a community that works for you.
Since joining the board in October 2021, Dr. Mauricio Cifuentes has already made a difference -- bringing a combination of expertise, experience, and commitment to justice and inclusion that inspire us all. Originally from Colombia, Dr. Cifuentes first career was in the law, where he both practiced and taught Labor Law at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana De Bogotá for twenty years before moving to the United States to pursue a career in social work. Earning a Master’s and PhD. in Social Work at Loyola University, with additional certifications in Clinical Practice with LGBTQI Individuals and Their Families. s Clinical Director of Cicero Family Services, he puts his experience to work by helping members of Latinx and immigrant communities overcome stigma and get the care we all deserve.
Dr. Cifuentes cites a few driving factors in his career change, including a passion for the practice of holistic community healthcare, his own experiences with anxiety and depression, a commitment to align his life with his values, and the providence of God. While new to NAMI Illinois, his years of involvement with our friends at NAMI Minnesota give him an intimate understanding of our shared commitment to being an “authentically grassroots organization...that never loses sight that it exists as a creation by its members, for its members,” pointing out that empowerment may be individual, organizations like NAMI can create the conditions and networks of support that foster personal power.
Already, Mauricio has made an impact, brokering relationships with leading LGBTQI+ health providers and other social justice organizations, while providing leadership on our newly formed Board Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee. As we move into strategic planning this summer, the Board DEI committee will be responsible for ensuring that current efforts to make Justice, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion a priority, not only continue and grow, but become a permanent lever for change - in NAMI and in our mental health community at large.
Great to have you aboard, Mauricio. NAMI Illinois continues to recruit new board members, strategic advisors, and is prioritizing communities that are underserved and underrepresented by mental health care, as well as skill sets such as community organizing, legal counsel, finance, and organizational development. If you'd like to learn more, please email VP/Organizational Development Chair, Carrie Worthington at Board@namiillinois.org.

Support from the comfort of your home! NAMI Basics On Demand and Other Virtual Resources
|
|
When it comes to finding mental health support and information, many things can get in the way, from a busy work week, distance, fear of being stigmatized, and the shortage of services -- especially in communities that don't have a local NAMI Affiliate (yet). The good news is that many NAMI programs are available online, as digital learning experiences or zoom-based live support groups or classes.
For parents, NAMI Basics on Demand is a great place to start. Parenting can be rewarding … it can also be taxing, overwhelming and isolating, especially when a child struggles with mental health issues. That's where NAMI Basics program, along with other free resources offered by NAMI Illinois, can help.
NAMI Basics On Demand is a six-session online class for parents, caregivers and other family who provide care for youth (under the age of 22) who are experiencing mental health symptoms. The program, which is guided by parents and family members with lived experiences, is self-paced and available 24/7. That means parents and caregivers can learn on their schedule, from facilitators who know what you're going through because they've been there. More information can be found on our website, with registration available here.
In addition to NAMI Basics, our “NAMI in Illinois” community offers a variety of free in-person and statewide virtual programs. Go to our Interactive Affiliate Map to find a NAMI Affiliate here or click the links below to sign up for a statewide virtual support group today, or visit our website to look for live or virtual programming organized by the NAMI nearest to you.
