NAMI-NYS Provides Testimony at Legislative Hearing on
Mental Health Crisis Response
On Tuesday, NAMI-NYS's Associate Director, Public Affairs Matthew Shapiro testified before a joint hearing on Mental Health Crisis Response held by Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther and Senator Samra Brouk.

Matthew testified how New York needs to ensure that a mental health crisis is met with a mental health response and how "providing an appropriate mental health response will benefit both law enforcement officers and those in need of help amid a crisis. A mental health response can get people on the road to recovery—and free up law enforcement to do the job they signed up to do."

Matthew detailed the three elements needed for mental health crisis response: crisis call centers, mobile crisis teams, and crisis stabilization options. He also explained the need to continue to fund CIT programs and work to prevent mental health crisis situations by increasing access to mental health services. NAMI-NYS also states our support for Daniel's Law.

Click here to watch the hearing, NAMI-NYS's testimony starts at the 54:16 mark and Matthew also participates in the question and answer period for the panel.

“How Technology Can Help In A Mental Health Crisis”

Thursday, May 27, 1:30 p.m. ET

The COVID-19 pandemic has created a world that is markedly different than a year ago. The NAMI HelpLine experienced more than a 90% increase in calls and emails over the past year — each representing an individual, a friend, a neighbor or a family member searching for help. And while 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. have a mental health condition, in February 2021 the U.S. Centers for Disease Control reported that 2 in 5 people in the U.S. are experiencing symptoms of depression or anxiety.

With growing numbers of people needing to be connected to mental health services, technology solutions are a vital way to meet this expanding need and make connections to care. In this webinar, leaders from Crisis Text Line and NAMI’s HelpLine will share what technology they use and how their technology helps those in crisis.

Presenters:
  • Dawn Brown, Director, NAMI HelpLine Services
  • Shairi R. Turner, M.D., M.P.H., Chief Transformation Officer, Crisis Text Line

NAMI Testifies Before U.S. House Appropriations Subcommittee On The Need To Fund Mental Health Crisis Services

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) testified today before the U.S. House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services and Education on the need to fund mental health crisis care, arguing that the nation’s lack of a comprehensive crisis system infrastructure too often leads to trauma and tragedy.

As the Subcommittee evaluates spending priorities for Fiscal Year (FY) 2022, Angela Kimball, NAMI’s National Director of Advocacy & Public Policy, testified on how the impending availability of 988, a nationwide, 3-digit number for mental health crises, provides an opportunity to reimagine how we respond to crises.

“While there is a clear vision for successful 988 crisis response systems, few systems meet the standards needed to realize this vision,” Kimball said. “Robust federal investment is required to realize the promise of 988 to deliver a mental health response to mental health crises.”

In October 2020, President Trump signed the National Suicide Hotline Designation Act into law. This legislation established 988 as the universal dialing code for mental health crisis and suicide prevention, to be routed through the existing National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. The Federal Communications Commission mandated that telecommunications carriers begin routing calls to 988 to the Lifeline no later than July 2022. In the addition to crisis call centers to respond to 988 calls, Kimball testified that additional investments are needed to fund mobile crisis teams and crisis stabilization programs to provide a full crisis response system.

“Without federal support, communities will be unable to develop and sustain a crisis infrastructure that ensures a mental health response will be available for mental health crises.”

NAMI’s full written testimony is available here. Watch the recording of this hearing here.
Advocates can contact their members of Congress here to voice support for crisis response funding.

NOTE: 988 may not be available on devices from all telecommunications carriers until July 2022. Anyone in crisis should continue to Text “NAMI” to 741741 or call the existing National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or their local mental health crisis line.

Mental Health Association in New York State Holds Creating Culturally Responsive Mental Health Education
for Immigrant Youth & Families

With the US becoming increasingly diverse, with 1/4 of youth being immigrants or children of immigrants, standard Eurocentric messaging in mental health education just isn't relatable to many immigrant kids and their families. This training will provide an overview of the unique mental health experiences of immigrant youth & families (including immigration/acculturation stress, perpetual foreigner stereotype, race-based traumatic stress, cultural stigma surrounding mental health, etc.); and guide educators in framing mental health messaging from a culturally responsive lens. Strategies discussed will include framing from cultural language and values, leveraging cultural beliefs/practices supportive of mental health, facilitating intercultural/intergenerational communication, and partnerships for community-led role modeling & leadership. The speaker will share lessons learned from community-led mental health education in Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities.

When May 24th, 2021 5:00 PM through 6:00 PM

The ALIGHT Schizophrenia Study Seeks Participants

Our partners at Manhattan Psychiatric Center are conducting a clinical research study and are looking for people who are living with schizophrenia to get involved.

While there are several treatment options available to help manage schizophrenia, for many people these treatments do not fully control their symptoms. Researchers are working hard to expand their knowledge of schizophrenia and improve available treatments.

Studies like this one are important for medical advances. Current treatments are only available because of past research study volunteers.

To pre-qualify for the ALIGHT schizophrenia study, a person must:
  • Be 18 to 50 years of age
  • Be diagnosed with schizophrenia
  • Be undergoing treatment with 1 or 2 antipsychotic medications
  • Have symptoms of schizophrenia that continue to negatively affect their life despite their current medication

This is not a complete list of study requirements. The study doctor will review all requirements with potential study participants and their caregivers. There is no cost to study participants for the study treatment or any study-related procedures or exams. In addition, reimbursement for study-related travel costs and meals may be available dependent on your country's regulations.

To learn more about the ALIGHT schizophrenia study or if you have any questions, please contact [email protected] or call 212-961-8992.
