--NAMI Support Groups--

E very Tuesday - 5:30 p.m.-7:00 p.m. (December 18th) Connection Support Group meets at R Place (10 E. Benton Street).

The Connection support group is facilitated by individuals living with a mental illness who are trained in facilitating support meetings, but are NOT professional counselors. The meetings are open to all individuals who have a mental illness.

Every Thursday - 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. (December 20th) Family Support Group meets at NAMIJC office (1105 Gilbert Ct. Suite 200).

The family support group is facilitated by family members, who are trained in facilitating support meetings, but are NOT professional counselors. The meetings are open to all families who are concerned about a family member who is experiencing mental illness.

Second Thursday each month - 9:00 a.m. (January 10th ) - NAMI Family Breakfast for breakfast and conversation.

Meets at Midtown Family Restaurant II (1069 Highway 1 West).

We are thrilled to announce that NAMI Johnson County

has been selected as a participant for The Gazette Gives Back 2019!

The Gazette Gives Back supports local nonprofits with free advertising to increase awareness of the critical resources and services made available to our region. In 2018, over $500,000 in free advertising was provided through this program. We need your vote to receive our share of the free ads!

Every subscriber of The Gazette has earned 5 votes and non-subscribers have 1 vote to support the GGB participant of their choice. There is no cost to vote.

Voting will take place November 16-December 31.

Go to www.thegazette.com/givesback where subscribers will login or can register an account. An email or postcard will go to every Gazette subscriber with voting instructions/reminders and a special section will be featured in the Thanksgiving edition of The Gazette.

Non-subscribers may go to the website and select "Not a Subscriber? You can still vote!" icon to participate.

Individuals unable to vote online may call in to The Gazette Customer Care (319-398-8333) or use the print ballots that will be available in the newspaper throughout the voting campaign.

Enrollment is open for an upcoming Mental Health First Aide Class on Wednesday, January 9th and Friday, January 11th from 12:30-5:30pm at the Johnson County Services Building (in Iowa City, IA). What is Mental Health First Aid?

The Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) program is an interactive 8-hour certification class that introduces participants to risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems, builds understanding of their impact, and overviews common treatments.

Specifically, participants learn:

· The potential risk factors and warning signs for a range of mental health problems, including: depression, anxiety/trauma, psychosis and psychotic disorders, eating disorders, substance use disorders, and self-injury,

· An understanding of the prevalence of various mental health disorders in the U.S. and the need for reduced stigma in their communities,

· A 5-step action plan encompassing the skills, resources and knowledge to assess the situation, to select and implement appropriate interventions, and to help the individual in crisis connect with appropriate professional care,

· The appropriate professional, peer, social, and self-help resources available to help someone with a mental health problem.

Similar to CPR, you will become certified as a Mental Health First Aider.

Who should become a Mental Health First Aider? All of the following will probably be in church congregations - so all apply! Rather than list all below, I would say - everyone from your church/synagogue/temple/etc. because they include (use following list)

Participants for each training vary, but include hospitals and federally qualified health centers, state policymakers, employers and chambers of commerce, faith communities, school personnel, state police and corrections staff, nursing home staff, mental health authorized support staff, young people, families, and the general public.
