Sharing 'The 1619 Project' in Afterschool Education Spaces

Wednesday, October 20 at 10:00am PDT

How can educators working in the afterschool space use resources from The 1619 Project to spark their students' creativity, teamwork, critical thinking, and media literacy skills? Join us for a webinar to explore new educational resources and methods to help educators bring The 1619 Project into the afterschool space. In addition to examining the history and the legacy of slavery in the United States, these resources guide students in celebrating the contributions of Black Americans to democracy and exploring the genius of Black innovators and artists.

Community STEM Collaborations that Support Children & Families

Youth are natural scientists at birth, discovering and exploring their world and trying to make sense of it. A child’s education is not limited to just the time they spend in the classroom. Children learn at home with their families, in public libraries, or through out-of-school-time experiences provided at community centers and in afterschool and summer learning programs, and even on vacations. In this paper, the authors endeavor to make the case that Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) is an ideal subject area that can engage children with fun, active learning activities. It is also an important societal area around which parents, librarians, and OST providers can collaborate and complement the work of schools.

Summer Camp2021:
More Anxiety, More Learning, More Hugs-Same Fun
Some school district-run and traditional summer camps infused more academics into their programs, while others doubled down on arts, crafts, and physical activity — but all focused on fun. For many children who descended on the nation’s public parks and schools this summer, camp was their first taste of normalcy in well more than a year. Educators, parents, and camp directors embraced the experience as a way to support student mental health as children isolated by the pandemic re-entered the outside world, in some cases for the first time since schools were shuttered.
HelpKidsRecover.org is a new resource site designed to provide local and state leaders with evidence-based practices for implementing quality afterschool and summer enrichment programs and help meet the American Rescue Plan (ARP) goals of addressing students' academic, social, emotional, and mental health needs.
