The winner for our $25 Nugget Alaskan Outfitter Gift Certificate in March was Richard Dalton. Winners are selected from those of you who receive and open our monthly e-newsletter. It doesn't matter when or how you signed up for our e-mail club - if you are on our email list you are a potential winner each month, Yeah!

We are aware that your email accounts receive a lot of daily mail, in an attempt to reduce our impact on your inbox, we have extended our weekly coupons to coupons that are good for a two week period and instead of sending out a separate email to announce the monthly winner, we will combine that good news with our monthly e-newsletter.

If you have any suggestions on how we can improve our e-newsletters and coupons or if there is a topic that you would like to see covered - please let us know. We appreciate and value your feedback!
Fitness Trackers - Garmin Vivofit

There are several wrist-worn fitness trackers on the market right now, each offering a range of features. The Nugget Alaskan Outfitter is currently carrying the Garmin Vivofit tracker, which was Garmin's first attempt to break into the non-GPS fitness tracking world. Garmin also has several GPS based fitness trackers such as the Forerunner, which we also carry, but in this article we will be looking only at the Vivofit.

Both the Vivofit models that we carry are sporty and light weight (25.5g) and come in a variety of colors. They both measure number of steps, distance, calories, time, and quality of sleep. What sets them apart from other brands is the personalized daily goal setter, which increases or decreases according to your own activity level. Each unit also has a motion tracker which will tell you when you have been sitting for too long. In the Vivofit tracker this feature is shown as a red bar which increases in length the longer you stay inactive. The Vivofit 2 has added an audible tone as a reminder. To reset the motion tracker all you need to do is get up and move.

Both units are heart-rate monitor compatible, waterproof and have a battery life that extends a full year or more. This is amazing considering most fitness trackers on the market have a battery life that is measured in days, not months.

Users can sync their Vivofits with the online program "Garmin Connect". The dashboard shows the most recent info from each main category, which includes steps, sleep, connections (friends) and activities. There's also the option to add more cards to the dashboard showing off your badges (achievements) and reports. Being able to store your data in one place and easily visualize it, is an essential feature for any fitness log, but an added bonus here is that you can also import activities from other devices.

Garmin has addressed the cons reported by earlier reviews of the Vivofit tracker and incorporated auto sync, a backlight and an activity counter to the new Vivofit 2 model. We carry the Vivofit tracker ($99.95), Vivofit 2 ($129.99) and the Vivofit 2 Bundle which comes with a heart rate monitor ($169.99).

Traditional running shoes feature pointy toe boxes that squeeze the toes out of their natural position-increasing risk of bunions, hammertoes and plantar fasciitis. Altra's FootShape™ toe box allows the toes to relax and spread out naturally and the big toe to remain in a straight position.

Every Altra running shoe features a fully cushioned Zero Drop™ platform that places the heel and forefoot the same distance from the ground. This natural balance aligns the feet, back and body posture for less impact. It also strengthens the Achilles and lower calf muscles that have been weakened over a lifetime of running on elevated heels.

Keeping you sure-footed on the edge, this extremely lightweight speed hiker is made for the ultimate adrenalized climbs and scrambles. Tenacious and durable, it spares every ounce, placing connection and cushioning where you need it: more cushioning at the heel buffers the descent, while it tapers at the forefoot for maximum ground feel and responsiveness over variable terrain. Four outer areas on the sole contain a softer Vibram rubber to simulate the softer outer area of a Mountain Goats foot. They have a well cleated and stiff sole which provide excellent grip on steep. slippery trails. They also come with or without a built in waterproof Goretex bootie.
