September Spotlight

NISAR Satellite Captures Its First Earth Images

Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech

The NASA-ISRO radar satellite, named NISAR, has delivered its first images. The image above shows North Dakota farmland, forests, and wetlands with remarkable clarity. Using dual-band radar technology, NISAR can penetrate vegetation to measure soil moisture and detect ground movements from earthquakes and landslides. Full science operations begin November 2025.

NASA Acres in the News

Dr. Rod Rejesus, a NASA Acres Research, Development, & Extension Partner, co-authored a study that found that before 2018, farmers with crop insurance were less likely to plant cover crops due to eligibility concerns. After the 2018 Farm Bill clarified their acceptability, this barrier largely disappeared.

Check out this article by the Illinois Field & Bean Team at the Illinois Soybean Association titled, “Why the ‘Space Race’ Matters to Illinois Soybean Production”. This article explores how NASA Acres is powering insights and tools that help farmers monitor crop health, manage water and nutrients, and improve yields.

Garden City Community College in Kansas partnered with NASA Acres to launch a Technology in Agriculture course this fall. The program combines classroom instruction with hands-on field work, teaching students to apply remote sensing science and satellite imagery analysis for practical agricultural decision-making and modern farming solutions.
