The story of Earth is a 4.5-billion-year saga of dramatic transformations driven by physical, chemical, and – based on a growing body of evidence – biological processes. Mineralogist and astrobiologist Robert Hazen will discuss how mineralogy and biology co-evolved, as changes in the chemistry of the oceans, atmosphere, and crust dramatically increased Earth’s mineral diversity to the more than 5,700 species known today.
For decades, NASA has been studying aircraft noise to reduce noise emissions, including the sonic booms created when aircraft break the sound barrier. Deputy Project Manager David Richwine will present some insight into the obstacles to quieting aircraft noise, describe the basic physics of sonic boom formation and propagation, and highlight the dominant features of the X-59 supersonic low-boom demonstrator aircraft.

DEVELOP provides 10-week research opportunities for participants to address environmental and policy concerns through the practical application of NASA Earth science information and geospatial data. Working in interdisciplinary teams and with the support of science advisors and mentors, DEVELOP participants build research and science communication skills that help them succeed in the workforce.
