How satellites are supporting farmers across Africa

Catherine Nakalembe, Africa Lead for NASA Harvest and a TED Fellow, uses satellite images and artificial intelligence to help farmers and governments respond to food crises. In her TED Fellows video, she explains how her team collects millions of photos of crops using GoPros on motorcycles, like a “Google Street View” for farms.

These images teach computers to better recognize small, diverse African fields, making it easier to track floods, droughts, and other threats to food security. Nakalembe’s work shows how technology, when designed for local needs, can help safeguard livelihoods and strengthen communities.

Bringing Clarity to Crop Cycles: How Data Fusion is Advancing Smallholder Agriculture in Egypt

New research from NASA Harvest scientists shows how combining open-access satellite data from Sentinel-2 and Landsat can improve the monitoring of smallholder farms in Egypt’s Nile Delta. Using the Sen2Like tool, scientists detected 91 percent of crop seasons over six years, helping identify planting and harvest dates with field-level accuracy.

Helmets Labeling Crops: A New Frontier in Agricultural Monitoring

NASA Harvest researchers have introduced an inventive approach to agricultural monitoring: field agents equipped with helmet-mounted GoPro cameras capture geotagged images of crops, later analyzed through deep learning. This low-cost, scalable technique enables rapid, reliable crop mapping, bridging on-the-ground observation and satellite data to strengthen food security efforts worldwide.

UMD-Led Team to Create New International Center for Rapid Agricultural Assessments

NASA Harvest is launching the RAAPID Center to deliver rapid, data-driven agricultural assessments during crises. Supported by Google.org, Microsoft, and international partners, RAAPID will integrate satellite technology and advanced analytics to provide timely, trusted insights that strengthen food security and inform decision-making worldwide.
