MEET THE PRESIDENT
Zuher Dhalla; President of Edmonton Jamaat
Another month another President!
We’d like to introduce the President of the Edmonton Jamat, Zuher Hidayatali Dhalla.
Tanga, a town in Tanzania bordered by the Kilimanjaro Region to the north; Manyara Region to the west; and the Indian Ocean to the East was formerly home to Zuher. Always an active community member, a volunteer, and an athlete, the young Zuher captained the local soccer and volleyball teams.
2020 will mark 33 years since Zuher moved to Canada. All his 3 children were born there, there is no other home. Moving west from Toronto to Edmonton in 1990, Zuher over the span of 16 years, undertook roles as Teacher, Secretary, Assistant Principal, Principal, Vice-President, Trustee, and now President of the Islamic Shia Ithna’Asheri Association (ISIA) of Edmonton.
Professionally, Zuher is a Software Developer and a Project Manager. However, as with all things Zuher, he brought his technical expertise in to serve the community, designing and developing the community website and the famous playandlearn.org.
Zuher’s path to presidency was rather uncommon. His journey began as a trustee of ISIA, and through unanticipated circumstances and at the behest of the community, Zuher Dhalla assumed the role of President. He took the trust placed in him very seriously: through the first year of his term, he has been actively working to achieve goals set by him and his team.
Zuher continues to thank Allah SWT for the opportunities presented to him throughout his life to serve and dedicate his time in the service of the living Imam ajtfs.
This booklet is the result of a four-stage initiative called ‘The Khums Guidance Project’. The aim of the project has been to provide practical guidance to the community on how khums is to be calculated according to the most up-to-date rulings of His Eminence al-Sayyid Ali al-Husayni al-Sistani (may Allah protect all our scholars). If you're ever visiting Austin, Texas be sure to stop by the Islamic Ahlul Bayt Association (aka IABA) when you're there! Located on Los Indos Trail, Austin. IABA consists of a diverse Shi'a community home to several ethnicities and backgrounds. They say southern hospitality is a thing and IABA is the epitome of just that.
Every Saturday afternoon their center opens for the weekly madressah classes followed by their weekly majalis program and niyaaz. IABA is also known for their Arabic language classes, older youth halaqa sessions, and adult education courses offered at the center.
The IABA community is set to break ground for their new center in the new year insh'Allah and the excitement of this new addition is contagious. The two-story building consists of a prayer and lecture hall on the ground floor, 10 classrooms and a complete library open to the members located on the upper floor. This expansion will cater to the needs of this growing community and their usage of the center.
NASIMCO representatives had the opportunity to visit IABA on November 23rd, 2019 for a walk through of the center and to discuss upcoming initiatives and plans for the center and NASIMCO, at large. The visit also entailed a meeting with the education board to go over the new MCE Tarbiyyah curriculum.
Donations from other members are more than appreciated to aid IABA in reaching their goal. Read

“And spend (in the way of Allah) from what We have provided you, before death approaches one of you and he says, "My Lord, if only You would delay me for a brief term, so I would give charity and be among the righteous." Surah Al-Munafiqun (63:10)
