MEET THE PRESIDENT
Kazim Mehdi: Imam Hussain Islamic Center
November’s here and so is NASIMCO’s Meet Your President panel! This month’s feature is our very own, Kazim Mehdi - president of Imam Hussain Islamic Center & NASIMCO’s Tier 2 Executive Councillor.
Brother Kazim’s involvement in the Shia communities in Minnesota began over 30 years ago in the year 1986 as the Media/AV system coordinator when Anjuman e Asghari was first getting established. At the time, Anjuman only consisted of a few families and Brother Kazim was amongst the 4 committee members who held an active role in the establishment.
Simultaneously, the Iraqi center also known as the Imam Hussain Islamic Center was founded and Brother Kazim attended both centers. In addition to his time spent with helping establish Anjuman e Asghari, he became heavily involved in the maintenance department of IHIC. In the year 2003, he was asked to take an official position in the IHIC maintenance department as their chairman. IHIC later had to shift to another location and after tireless hours of looking into options, they were very warmly welcomed into a local church. The church was gifted by Father Joseph, a local Pastor who felt honored to host another community as his guests in the building for approximately 2.5 years. Through these years, the IHIC community looked into a property of their own and eventually found a commercial medical building which they purchased and began construction on right away. Lead by Brother Kazim Mehdi, the construction consisted of taking walls down and remodeling the entire infrastructure to bring it to where it is today; 10 rooms on the upper level with a large Husainiyyah room downstairs.
During our interview with him he focused mainly on the center and it’s achievements but very little about his role, when we interviewed a fellow committee member, Brother Ahmad Yassine of the IHIC - he stressed on the “pivotal” role Brother Kazim played throughout the establishment of the Imam Hussain Islamic Center. Today, their efforts shine through their community as being one of the two Shi’a centers in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota which is open to all. Over the last 3 years, IHIC has established the Al Hadi clinic - a free medical clinic which runs every weekend open to the general public. This medical clinic consists of an eye clinic and a generic health clinic where local doctors and volunteers render their services. During our conversation with Brother Kazim and Brother Ahmad, they both mentioned that collecting funds were their biggest struggles but ... ‘when you leave it to Allah, there will always be a way.’ Brother Kazim has many plans and visions for this center and the Shi’a community at large - we pray he is granted the strength and support to continue doing this work of God.
Brother Kazim Mehdi has been an active member of the NASIMCO team since the year 2016 where he came on as counselor, he led the youth desk in the year 2018 and empowered several youths to take on positions within the NASIMCO team. Today, he is in his 5th term as the president at IHIC and is the Tier 2 counselor for the 2019-2022 NASIMCO term.
