NASPA and the First Gen Forward Initiative: Empowering First-Generation Student Success

and Celebrating First-Generation College Celebration Day

Each November 8th, the nation celebrates First-Generation College Celebration Day — a time to honor the courage, resilience, and impact of students who are the first in their families to pursue higher education. What began as a milestone has grown into a movement, shining a light on those whose determination transforms not only their lives but entire communities.

This day traces its roots to the Higher Education Act of 1965, a landmark law that opened the doors of opportunity for students from all backgrounds. Since then, first-generation college students have changed the face of higher education, breaking barriers, redefining success, and proving that knowledge is one of the most powerful tools for progress.

Nearly one-third of college students in the U.S. today are the first generation in their families to attend and graduate from an institution of higher education. They come from every walk of life — the children of immigrants, rural scholars, veterans returning to school — each carrying forward the hopes of their families and communities. Programs like First Gen Forward, powered by NASPA, continue to uplift these students through mentorship, connection, and community. They serve as a national beacon, ensuring that first-generation scholars are not only seen and supported but also celebrated for the pioneers they are.

NASPA — Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education — is a leading professional organization dedicated to advancing the work of student affairs and higher education professionals. With members representing more than 1,000 institutions worldwide, NASPA supports innovation, equity, and student success through research, advocacy, and professional development.

In partnership with the Center for First-generation Student Success, NASPA launched the First Gen Forward Initiative to recognize and support colleges and universities that are committed to improving experiences and outcomes for first-generation college students.

Institutions selected as First Gen Forward campuses are part of a national network that shares evidence-based practices, builds institutional support systems, and fosters communities of belonging for first-generation students. These campuses receive professional resources, mentorship, and collaboration opportunities to help drive systemic change — ensuring that being “first” is not a barrier but a source of pride and empowerment.

At its core, the First Gen Forward Initiative celebrates and strengthens the movement to make higher education accessible, inclusive, and transformative for all.

Networking and attending conferences are powerful ways to build community, exchange ideas, and inspire collective progress—especially for those committed to advancing equity and opportunity in higher education. Events like the GlobalMindED conference create spaces where students, educators, business leaders, and advocates come together to make connections, share best practices, celebrate success stories, and collaborate to change the trajectory of students' lives. These connections help transform passion into action, strengthening programs that support first-generation students and underserved communities. By participating, attendees not only expand their professional networks but also become part of a growing movement dedicated to ensuring that every student has the opportunity to thrive.
