Message from Chapter President
|
Happy Social Work Month!
In celebration of Social Work Month, please join me in acknowledging the following messages that were submitted in honor of those social workers who inspire and motivate.
Carol Edwards is inspired by:
My mom, Monticello Campbell, set the standard for professionalism and social work excellence. She brings best practice standards to life!
Marjorie Craig, my first professional supervisor, understood clinical dynamics and modeled interpersonal relationships based on integrity and compassion. She believed in me and provided invaluable throughout my career. Margie left behind a legacy that binds all who knew and loved her. I am forever grateful.
Paty 'Mariposa' Hernandez is inspired by:
I left the US and my social work connection in 2013 after graduating with my Masters in Social Work and Public Health to pursue living abroad to work with a non-profit. During this time I also added energy healing work along with health coaching to my professional tools while working in a macro setting.
A year later I returned to my home base of Miami due to family reasons.
Then I began to reconnect to my social work roots and chose to obtain my LCSW.
I was soon introduced to the leadership team for the Miami-Dade Unit and agreed to join because I wanted to be reminded of what being a social worker was all about.
That was two years ago.
During this time I met a few outstanding social workers who have encouraged me in so many ways, such as speaking at the state conference (two years in a row this June).
I'd like to state who they are.
Susan Mankita
Edith Cabelloro
Juliet Araujo (my supervisor)
Martha vallejo
Michael Moss is inspired by:
I would like to thank Diane Lindner for teaching me about casework relationships during my second year MSW program at Barry University in 1982.
Shelly F. Wilson is inspired by:
The social worker I admire is
Leslie Allen.
In gratitude,
Carol Edwards, LCSW

I hope your semester is going well.
The leadership team has been hard at work preparing for
LEAD. It's been a pleasure to connect with students across the state, and discuss ways to spread awareness about the work of NASW-FL. I am excited to interact with all of the amazing student leaders and hear their thoughts on how to make LEAD more meaningful.
Additionally, as I approach my last few months in my position, I am excited for the student leader who will take my position. If any student is interested in learning more about the role, please feel free to reach out as well via email at
kapria.lee2@gmail.com with any questions, comments, or concerns.
Good luck on midterms and I hope you have a great spring break!
Happy Social Work Month!

Although the Florida Legislative Session officially started on March 5, 2019 and ends on May 3, 2019, NASW-FL advocacy efforts occur all year long. One of the largest of these actions by NASW-FL is
LEAD (Legislative Education Advocacy Day). This two-day event is April 2 - 3, 2019 this year. Last year at LEAD we had more than 950 social work practitioners, students and educators attend meetings with legislators and committee hearings to advocate for our profession and the individuals, families and communities we serve.
If you have attended LEAD in the past I encourage you to not only come back, but to also motivate at least two more people to come with you. If you have never attended I personally invite you whether you are a student, new to the field, retired or simply want to exercise your NASW Code of Ethic 6.04 call to engage in social and political action to join us.
Here are some ways you can support and participate in LEAD:
- Attend the 2-day event in Tallahassee (April 2-3). Please click here for more information and to register: http://www.naswfl.org/legislative.html.
- Encourage at least two fellow students, educators, and/or practitioners to attend LEAD.
- Call your Legislator on April 3 to support the LEAD bills that NASW-FL will advocate for or against. Here is a link to the bills.
- Support and Follow LEAD on April 2 & April 3 by posting on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram using #NASWFL and #NASWFLLEAD19.
Thank you all in advance for whatever way you choose to participate in
LEAD!
