Message from Chapter President
|
Greetings,
I was recently asked an excellent question, "What does NASW actually do?" It is certainly not the first time I have been asked this question, so, I have had time to consider the best response.
Perhaps I should respond with one of the following: The elevator speech we developed at a board meeting; quote from the NASW one-pager on the benefits of membership; sing praises regarding the annual conference; or I could say, "let me show you." I chose the latter, because for me, the question is seeking a demonstrated response, without emotion or a sales pitch.
One of the challenges we have as an association of very busy, skilled, and passionate professionals, is that we rarely have time to toot our horn or include everyone in the loop as decisions are made, policy briefs are published, research collaborations are established, trainings are conducted, coalitions are formed, congressional testimonies are delivered, and professional ethics and standards are updated to align with cultural humility and social justice. So, I encourage each of you to take a moment to explore the NASW website in a few strategic areas.
Like the person with the recent question, I am sure you will be impressed by the work being produced on a national level. I am posting a few of my favorite links to get you started. I encourage you to then shine a light, by sharing your favorites with members and non-members.

Student Representatives Column
|
Hello Fellow Social Work Students,
I hope you are having a smooth and easy beginning of the semester. Now that syllabus week is over you should be getting into the habit of setting up a schedule for yourself, especially if you are an online student. Remember to not only schedule in your schoolwork but also some self-care activities. Make plans to go on a walk, go to the beach, or just hang out with friends and family.
If you are feeling overwhelmed or in need of assistance, be sure to use all of the available resources around you. Many campuses offer student associations you can join. You can also reach out to your local NASW Unit.
Best,
Ashton Sanchez
MSW Student Representative

Integrating Social Care into the Delivery of Health Care
|
NASW is a sponsor of a National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine Consensus Study, Integrating Social Care into the Delivery of Health Care: Moving Upstream to Improve the Nation's Health. The public webinar and study release is Wednesday, September 25 from 11:00 AM-12:00 PM (Eastern).
This study is an important opportunity to promote and elevate the social work profession. It will examine the ways in which health care systems address the social determinants of health and it will evaluate the roles of health professionals across the care continuum. We expect that the study will highlight the contributions of social workers that improve health outcomes and reduce health inequities. The study has been funded by a broad coalition of philanthropic foundations, social work organizations, and over 60 social work academic programs. Three social work experts serve on the Study Committee.
The webinar will provide an overview of the report, with discussion of the report's findings, recommendations, and key messages.

July 2019 - October 2019
The National Association of Social Workers is proud to represent social workers across our nation. Together, we've accomplished much for our profession and the people we serve during the past 60 years. But to successfully address today's pressing social issues - mental health, addiction, gun violence, sexual and domestic violence, immigration, poverty, homelessness, voters' rights, criminal justice, environmental justice - we must grow our resources and make our voice even louder.
Please participate and to show our appreciation and gratitude for helping to grow the association and make our voice louder, all those who successfully recruit members during the Member Referral campaign will be offered a special gift. Those recruited will be offered a gift, too.

August 2019
For several years, suicide has remained among the top 10 causes of death for ages 10 through 44. Data from the National Center for Health Statistics'
Suicide Mortality in the United States, 1999-2017 brief indicates that suicide rates in the United States increased by 33 percent during that review period (Hedegaard, Curtin, & Warner, 2018). In 2018,
JAMA Pediatrics published a research letter titled "Racial Disparity in Suicide Rates Among US Youth From 2001
Through 2015" (Bridge et al., 2018). The letter noted that an analysis of data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Web-based Injury Statistics Query and Reporting System revealed an increase in the rates of suicide amongst black youths ages five through 11. The letter also noted that there was a decrease in suicide rates among white youths in the same age group. "Analyses revealed that the suicide rate among those younger than 13 years is approximately 2 times higher for black children compared with white children, a finding observed in boys and girls" (Bridge et al., 2018, p. 698)

September 2019
Insurance policies are legal contracts. As such, they are very complicated and loaded with legal terms and precise definitions. Unlike the NASW Risk Retention Group that puts its insureds first, insurance carriers are in business to maximize profits, especially the Wall Street insurance companies. As a result, they utilize their decades of claims history and loss experience to carve out certain risks and perils from their insurance policy coverages.
