The 2024 NASW-SD West River Conference is an opportunity for connection, growth, reflection, and celebration. Keynote, plenary and breakout sessions will explore social and political advocacy, anti-racism, social change ecosystem development, and mental health. Attendees will explore incorporating Indigenous knowledge, values, and practices into social work frameworks to create more culturally relevant and respectful approaches. For centuries, Native communities have cultivated deep, respectful connections with the land, recognizing the profound interdependence between people and nature. While modern wellness culture increasingly embraces nature as a source of healing, these practices often lack acknowledgment of their Indigenous roots. The NASW-SD West River Conference provides an opportunity to honor the Indigenous traditions that form the basis of many social work healing practices today, and to explore how integrating these approaches—while respecting their cultural significance and origins—can foster healing for individuals, families, and communities.
