May Observances

Below are some of the observances for the Month of May that our members have passed along. Take a look!

Asian American Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

NASW celebrates AANHPI Heritage Month by honoring the achievements of individuals of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander descent throughout the country. Let's recognize the creativity, strength, and trailblazing nature of countless AANHPI leaders who have played a vital role in shaping the narrative of America!

Mental Health Awareness Month

A new resource, NASW Celebrates Mental Health Awareness Month, has been posted to the Tips and Tools website. During the month of May, the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) recognizes millions of people impacted by mental health conditions in the United States. The association also acknowledges the ongoing dedication of social workers who provide mental health services such as crisis intervention, assessment, treatment, and support.

May is National Foster Care Month

Many aspects of foster care are challenging for children and their families but as social workers, we can help families through this difficulty. Prioritizing kinship care, training foster families, and incorporating lived expertise into service delivery are all important practices to support foster youth this month and beyond. Click here for resources and organizations that focus on the well-being of foster youth.

May is Older Americans Month

The Social Security Administration has prepared Outreach Materials for People with Limited English Proficiency (LEP). Basically, it explains what social security is, how to access it, etc. Please click here for more information.

COVID-19 Vaccine Hesitancy: Understanding the Impact of Cultural Trauma in the Hispanic Community

The rise of the COVID-19 vaccine uncovered racial inequities, science skepticism, and historical trauma. Even though four years have passed since the COVID-19 pandemic started, the number of hospitalizations and deaths in Washington state has not stopped. One of the largest counties in the state of Washington, King County, reported 2,695 COVID-19-related hospitalizations in just the past six months (https://kingcounty.gov/en/dept/dph/health-safety/disease-illness/covid-19/data/covid-summary). Racial disparities continue to have alarming rates, with minority groups being the most affected. Moreover, the vaccination rates in these minority groups are still low. In King County alone, Hispanics have the lowest vaccination rate, even though COVID-19 continues to affect many families. Click here to read the full article.
