Women Export Academy Sessions Occurring In June

The Women Export Academy is a collaborative initiative between the U.S. Commercial Service and UPS that aims to increase the participation of women-owned and women-led business in exporting and to create more opportunities for women entrepreneurs to achieve economic equality. This capacity building program will equip entrepreneurs with the necessary tools and resources to become globally competitive and increase the participation of women-owned and women-led businesses in international trade. The sessions are free to attend and take place every Thursday at 11:00 am ET. NAWBO Announces Inaugural Day Of Service Event

Join NAWBO and the the Women Presidents Organization for the inaugural National Day Of Service on June 24. The goal of this event is for our members to come together on one day each year to help women in our communities. This year, we are partnering with Dress For Success in 13 of its U.S. locations, and there are several ways to get involved in-person or by making a donation.

Nominate A NAWBO Woman For Member Of The Year

Nominations are open for the NAWBO National Member of the Year Award. This award recognizes a “champion” member who has demonstrated an ongoing commitment to her chapter and the mission of the organization. She has consistently given her time and resources to the betterment of the NAWBO community and the longevity of the founders’ vision to propel women business owners. Premier members are eligible, and the deadline to nominate is June 30.

Click HERE to view the most recent advocacy updates. The SBA Office of Advocacy released a report entitled African-American Entrepreneurs: Contributions and Challenges Report. The report shows that African-Americans are underrepresented among self-employed workers. When African-Americans own firms, they are less likely to have employees, operate with less financing and are more likely to forego applying for loans.

This study examines long-term trends in African-American entrepreneurship and the racial gaps in financing and self-employment among business owners. Despite the financial constraints that African-American-owned firms operate under, they consistently do more with less when they receive financing. The authors conclude that targeted financial programs like the Community Reinvestment Act may be useful for policymakers when seeking to reverse these trends. Here is the Research Summary.
