By Michele Katz,
NAWBO President
I started my law firm in March of 2012. In September of that same year, my father passed away.
Not a day goes by that I don't think of him. Today, though, he's especially top of mind because I can't speak about philanthropy, the topic of this blog post, without thinking of this unassuming man most people called "Sid," who gave generously in both time and money. He would tell me: You give until you feel it.
The list of things that made up his life is lengthy, and I could never do it justice. But, here are some highlights: He was a loving father and grandfather, iconic patent lawyer for 46 years, alumnus of the Illinois Institute of Technology (class of '62), college radio host for WIIT (IIT renamed the studio in his honor in 2011), international lecturer and entrepreneur, a founder of the intellectual property law firm Welsh and Katz, which grew to more than 50 attorneys and became well known worldwide, recipient of numerous legal and humanitarian awards, an honorary fellow of The Hebrew University, donor of an endowment to underwrite the A. Sidney Katz Lecture Series at George Washington University Law School (he was class of '66), and my "go to" person (as he was for the rest of the family, friends and many strangers).
