NBA Hosts Black-Owned Business Workshop

Today, the NBA hosted the Ways to Better Finance Black-Owned Businesses Workshop at The Venue at Highlander in North Omaha.


Thank you to Christi Ballard, founder of Status, and DaShawn McGary, founder of Divine Living, for sharing their perspectives as black business owners.


Leslie Andersen, i3 Bank (Bennington); Kathryn Barker, Core Bank (Omaha); Adrian Hernandez, Dundee Bank (Omaha); and Miriam Midzi, FNBO (Omaha) share bank perspectives on funding small business loans.


Dan Hoffman, Invest Nebraska; Jim Reiff, Nebraska Enterprise Fund; and Malinda Williams, Omaha 100, Inc. discussed small business credit alternatives.


NBA President and CEO Richard Baier said the session is the start of the dialogue and better understanding between banks and Black and Brown business owners.

Husker Harvest Days Tickets Available

The NBA is now accepting orders for Husker Harvest Days admission and lunch tickets. Admission tickets purchased through the NBA are available at a discounted rate of $9. The $15 lunch tickets can be used to purchase a meal at one of the five food stands at the event. 


Order online at the link below and pay with a credit card or receive an invoice. Tickets will be mailed once payment has been received. Orders must be received by Aug. 31 to allow time for processing and mailing.

Record State Tax Revenues

Nebraska finished the 2021-2022 fiscal year with a record-high $6.35 billion in tax revenues, a 30.1% increase over previous estimates.

ABA: Revise CRA Modernization Proposal

The American Bankers Association (ABA) called for regulators to rethink certain aspects of the proposal to update the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA). The ABA submitted comments for the record to a House Financial Services subcommittee hearing on the proposal. Rebalancing the proposed benchmarks and rating methods, as well as extending the transition period, were among the recommendations offered by the ABA. The ABA also called for credit unions and other financial services providers to be subject to CRA-like requirements.

SAFE Banking Act Included in House Defense Bill

The SAFE Banking Act was included in the 2023 National Defense Authorization Act passed by the House last week. The bill will help ensure banks can serve legitimate cannabis businesses.

Fed Seeks Comments on LIBOR Act Implementation Rules 

The Federal Reserve (Fed) released a proposal that would establish benchmark rates for certain contracts that use the LIBOR reference rate. The proposal would also clarify additional definitions consistent with the Adjustable Interest Rate (LIBOR) Act passed by Congress earlier this year.

Fed Releases Senior Financial Officer Survey Results

The most recent Senior Financial Officer Survey about banks’ strategies and practices for managing reserve balances was conducted in May 2022. The Fed’s Board of Governors released the results late last week.

FHFA Creates Fintech Office, Examines Role of Technology in Housing Finance

The Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) established an Office of Financial Technology to address emerging fintech issues. The Agency is also requesting comments on the role of fintech in housing finance.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) released a statement and provided updates to frequently asked questions relating to brokered deposit reporting requirements.

Meet A Banker

Meet Tanner Schwanz! He is a member of the NBA Leadership Class of 2024 and a vice president, commercial lending, at Cornerstone Bank in York. His internship experience during college inspired his banking career.

 

Tanner believes that effective leaders have a clear goal and open communication with their teams. He said, “In pursuit of the goal, [leaders] identify strengths and foster the growth and development of individuals on their team.”

Intern Spotlight

Agribusiness Banking & Finance major Tanner Kirchhoff is interning at Midwest Bank in Lincoln. He is a senior at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and graduated from Kearney High School.

 

His internship has given him an in-depth look at the teamwork it takes to build a strong company and be successful. He says the most beneficial part of his internship “has been experiencing all the underwriting and behind-the-scenes work that you don’t get to see day to day as a lender, which makes me appreciate other peers’ jobs more.”

Help UNL Students Polish Their Interview Skills

Bankers with interviewing experience are invited to participate in practice interviews and resume reviews with University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Business students. More than 500 business students will participate in the practice interviews with participating employers on Sept. 12-15.
