HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM NBANH
|
2021 is offering hope that with a vaccine we will be able to return to our pre-pandemic daily lives. However, there have been lessons in 2020 that will be worth holding onto in spite of our collective eagerness to move pass this year. The importance of togetherness and what that means for our homes and communities, staff, residents and families should always be considered and valued. We are all part of such an integrated community that ultimately keeps us all depending on one another in ways we may not have fully appreciated before.
On behalf of the NBANH team, we wish everyone a holiday break filled with rest and renewal, ready for our continued efforts in the battle against COVID 19 in the new year.
Thanks for reading,

Continued success in recruiting IENs
We are so pleased to welcome Yasir and Saju to New Brunswick and into our nursing home family! Lezlie and Megan at Passamaquoddy Lodge were quick to act on new resumes received from BC and were able to add two new staff members to their team - from interview, through the required self-isolation period, to on the floor working – in under three weeks! Yasir and Saju will be working as Resident Attendants while we support them in working towards their RN licenses over the next year.
Please reach out to Sergio or Cassandra today! We can help your home through the same process.
Congratulations Lezlie and Megan and welcome home Yasir and Saju!

A message from administrator of Passamaquoddy Lodge, Lezlie LeBlanc
Passamaquoddy Lodge started the process back December 2019 of obtaining the Designated Employer status with the province so that we could hire Internationally Educated Registered Nurses. We were successful in obtaining this designation back in February 2020 and then COVID hit! Recently we have been working with Sergio and Mélanie at NBANH to help us recruit Registered Nurses. We were so lucky to interview and hire two gentlemen who are IENs. Yasir Sani is from Nigeria and Saju Thotta Parambil is from India. Both of these men attended OMNI College and they reached out to Sergio to see if there were opportunities for employment in New Brunswick. They have only just started working at our nursing home, and staff are so happy to have them join our team as Resident Attendants. We look forward to working with them as they continue down their path to become Registered Nurses in our country. The Multicultural Association of Charlotte County has been very supportive and welcoming with Yasir and Saju! They provided them with welcome gifts, have taken them to appointments, and are assisting with any additional English language training they require to pass a competency test. It has been a very positive experience for all of us!

Local Deepening Community Initiative
Collaborative for Healthy Aging and Care
You may remember that the Collaborative for Healthy Aging and Care established a partnership with the Tamarack Institute to bring their Local Deepening Community Initiative to New Brunswick, which aims to explore the different ways that we can build connections with our neighbours and across generations in community.
While the Covid-19 pandemic has changed the way in which we can engage with our larger community, Foyer Assomption has been working to keep residents connected by partnering with the local school, École de l’Acadie, in hosting a photo activity with the children and youth of Rogersville!
In October, students were invited to carve or decorate a pumpkin, take a picture, and share with the nursing home. A total of 37 pictures were submitted! Pictures were then compiled into a power point and shared with the residents on Halloween! Once again, they have partnered again to host a similar activity for Christmas.
Click here to see activity posters!
Two team leads from Foyer Assomption and Forestdale Home also participated in an Asset-Based Community Development virtual workshop hosted by the Tamarack Institute. Throughout this interactive workshop, participants gained knowledge and tools on citizen-centered and place-based community development approaches. For more information on the workshop, click here. If you are interested in learning more about the learning opportunities offered by Tamarack, please contact Erin Jackson at admin@nbcollab.ca

Help us spread Holiday Cheer to NB Nursing Homes Campaign
We are LIVE on facebook with the Holiday Campaign "Holiday Cheer to New Brunswick Nursing Homes".
The NBANH wants to let residents and staff know that they are supported by sharing messages of Cheer from the public. We are asking members of the public to send NBANH cards, drawings, email messages, or even videos with a note of cheer! We will assemble all the messages into a special video for all residents and staff to enjoy around the province.
If you would like to share in a different format, please contact Mélanie Eva to see how she can help you spread the word.

StatCan collecting information on the impacts of COVID-19 on health care workers
Statistics Canada is currently using crowdsourcing to collect data on the impacts of COVID-19 on Canadian health care workers, with particular focus on access to personal protective equipment (PPE) and infection prevention and control (IPC) measures in the workplace. This data will help to inform the delivery of health care services, and to better understand what health care workers need in terms of equipment, training and support.
We encourage anyone working in a health care setting to participate. This includes those providing health care services directly to individuals (e.g. physicians, nurses, massage therapists, dentists, dietitians), but also those providing technical support (e.g. receptionists, technicians) and other services in a health care setting (e.g. cleaning and food services staff, security).

Trauma NB
Fall Talk is a provincial campaign by Trauma NB. This bilingual campaign raises awareness of the risks and consequences of falls and promotes the prevention resources available to citizens and healthcare professionals alike.
Every day in New Brunswick, 8 older adults are admitted to a hospital because of fall-related injuries. The average length of the hospital stay for victims of fall-related injuries is 23 days. Every year, preventable injuries cost our healthcare system 400 Million dollars. And every year, 400 New Brunswickers are killed by injuries, including those caused by falls.
Everyone is at risk for falls, but as we grow older the risk of injury due to falls increases. Falls among older adults can lead to reduced mobility and independence, as well as increased risk for admission into a long-term care facility.
We're inviting New Brunswick to talk falls. We invite you to take part in raising awareness of fall prevention by using and sharing the resources available at falltalk.ca.
Trauma NB is proud to host and support Finding Balance NB. As the provincial lead agency for injury prevention across New Brunswick, Trauma NB also provides leadership and coordination of clinical care, education and research related to serious and critical injuries in the province.
