National Black Child Development Week: Day 2

All week, be on the lookout for this daily NBCDW newsletter. Don't miss chances to win giveaways of children's books, music CDs and other resources to support young children's creative development.

We hope you enjoyed yesterday's NBCDW 2021 Kickoff featuring The Undefeated by Kwame Alexander. Today's focus is Infants & the Arts.

Here's our agenda for the rest of the week:
  • Wednesday: Toddlers & the Arts
  • Thursday: Preschoolers & the Arts
  • Friday: School-agers & the Arts
Daily Tip: Creative Development & Infants

Children are born creative, but can lose their creativity as they transition through life and into adulthood.

What can YOU do?
Encourage the continual development of creativity by following the lead of infants and young children.
  • Provide time and space for play.
  • Praise them as they explore and learn.
  • Use household items, recycled objects and natural materials to spark creative play.
  • Make creative play a part of everyday activities, such as singing and dancing during daily routines.
Storytime Feature for Infants
Creative Development Experiences

Before and/or after the read-aloud of Llama Llama Nighty-night...

  • Sing one or more relaxing daily routine songs for brushing teeth, bathtime, and bedtime. Better yet, create your own song to start a family tradition.

  • Promote mindfulness through empowering exercises, such as Chin Up. Encourage infants to mimic your movements. You'll be surprised at what they can do!

  • Create a llama puppet with infants and young children. Reenact the story together.

  • Please send us pictures or videos to info@bcdiatlanta.org. Just type NBCDW 2021 in the subject line and include a description of your photo(s) or video(s) in the body of the email. We'll send a special package of goodies to anyone who shares their NBCDW media footage with us.
