APRIL 2021
Dear NBG Community,
I am delighted to write to you in April’s expanding light. My delight extends to the announcement of the third set of classes in our Book Arts Basic Series: Glued Structures. The focus skill of this series will be learning how to cover book boards with paper and cloth, an essential building block for bookmakers. Progressing in complexity, Series 3 offerings are appropriate for beginning book artists who have some experience and familiarity with bookmaking tools and materials, as well as experienced bookmakers who want to expand their repertoire of structures. All materials (quality papers and cloth, book board, glue, directions, and diagrams) will be provided for pickup before each class. Please see the detailed descriptions below. Support from the Alaska State Council on the Arts made these classes possible. The grant funding ends in June, but since these classes have been so well received, your NBG Board is considering ways to repeat the series in the future.

Another exciting piece of news is that the Set Book Project is nearing completion. Sixteen NBG artists began this project over a year ago and with Margo Klass’ inspired leadership they have continued through the pandemic. It is thrilling to see the many ways Guild artists have "stretched" to create a set of exquisite books that will be celebrated at our Books As Art 3 show this November in the Bear Gallery.

I am thrilled to see the ways NBG members are making books inspired by the Fabulous Foldable models that have been presented at our last two program meetings. You can look forward to learning three more foldable structures at the May, July, and September meetings. The Books As Art 3 exhibition committee is planning to showcase Fabulous Foldable books in our November show, so I hope you will embrace this opportunity to let your imaginations play with the myriad possibilities foldable structures provide.

In closing, I want to offer my sincere apology for missing the March 20th Program Meeting. I was engulfed in a family medical emergency and I am grateful to all the board members who stepped up at the last minute to shoulder the responsibility for the meeting. It is a privilege to be part of this Guild, a talented group of book artists, a compassionate community of kindred spirits.

As always, I welcome your questions, suggestions, and ideas.
Warmest regards,
Susan Campbell
NBG President

BOOK ARTS BASICS 3: Glued Structures
5-PANEL SCREEN STRUCTURE
with Connie Stricks
Sunday, May 16, 2021 - 10-noon and 1-3pm
Instructional fee: $50 (includes materials)

This workshop introduces the 5-panel screen structure, a double-sided board book which displays well, can be easily scaled to different sizes, and folds flat for storage. In class we will make an 8 x 6” screen, covering its panels with paper, and creating paper hinges that allow the screen to open and close. This structure is a good way to hone your measuring and gluing skills. Although there may not be time to embellish your screen in class, techniques and considerations for adding imagery will be discussed and examples shown, and you will leave with a screen ready for your finishing touches. Some experience in bookmaking recommended. Materials will be available for pick up at the NBG Studio, Wednesday, May 12, noon-2pm.
BOOK ARTS BASICS 3: Glued Structures
CONCERTINA ALBUM
with Margo Klass
Sunday, May 23, 2021 - 10-noon and 1-3pm
Instructional fee: $50 (includes materials)

The concertina album binding elegantly holds a collection of photos or other images. It looks like a traditional book, but opens out for display. In this workshop we’ll learn how to fold and hinge lengths of paper to make accordion-folded panels, cover boards with book cloth, inset a cover plate, and join text block to cover structure. Finally, we will discuss methods of adding images to the album. Some experience in bookmaking recommended. Materials and instructional guidelines will be available for pick up at the NBG Studio, Wednesday, May 19, noon-2pm.
BOOK ARTS BASICS 3: Glued Structures
CASED-IN BINDING
with Ashley Thayer
Sunday, June 13, 2021 - 10-noon and 1-3pm
Instructional fee: $50 (includes materials)

Make a cased in binding, similar to the familiar books you have on your shelves at home. We will start by learning proper terminology, then basic construction of a book including a sewn text block, endpapers, and faux endbands. This is a great precursor to other traditional binding styles. Some bookmaking experience recommended. Materials and instructional guidelines will be available for pick up at the NBG Studio, Wednesday, June 9, noon-2pm.

Bookmaking: Collage as Content
Friday, June 4 6-8pm
Saturday and Sunday, June 5-6 10-noon and 1-3pm
Margo Klass, Instructor

This workshop focuses on using collage to tell a story. A combination of form, color, and space become a visual language to impart content. Just as we read from left to right, we will create our collaged images progressively from one panel to the next, intentionally including both movement and rest throughout the 6-paneled concertina structure. Discrete areas of hand-stitched texture will be added to punctuate space and embellish forms. A colophon, on the reverse of the last panel, can include written information about its imagery, if desired. The completed concertina will be cased in board covers, with an inset cover plate, to create the finished book.

The workshop format will include the following:
·      Pre-workshop appointment (in person, with masks and social distancing) to pick up materials, select palette, and determine scale for your project.
·      Workshop sessions on Zoom as outlined above.
·      Post-workshop appointments (virtual or in person) to bring project to completion.
