April 2024

Hello Book Artists,

“April Showers bring spring flowers.” At least that is the hope! NBG has a busy spring/early summer line up for our members. First, we have our upcoming program meeting and classes. Our program meeting will be April 21 along with three classes scheduled in April and May. Please review the newsletter for details about the program meeting and the classes. Guild member Sherill Peterson is planning work sessions in April for the Letterpress Haiku assembly. The Letterpress Haiku books are the next series of artist books to be made for the Art-O-Mat. If you are a beginning book artist, this would be a great time to pick up a few skills. There will be a job for everyone with this project. Also in April is the opening of the UAF Museum show “Thinking Made Visible”. Several guild members are included in this show so mark your calendar for April 27th.

Future activities include the Tiny Book Party on May 19, and the June 6th opening of "Contemporary Meets Vintage", the culmination of the collaboration of Fairbanks Antique Auto Museum and NBG. This exhibit includes 19 members presenting their book creations to the public. Start thinking about and making books for our October First Friday show at the 2 Street Gallery also. Finally, the best new news is that we have a date for our BOOKS AS ART 4 show with the Fairbanks Arts Association - our show is scheduled for the entire Bear Gallery in June 2025!

As always, we have an open studio every Wednesday from noon - 2pm, and during the month of April on Sundays from 3 - 5pm.

Please remember to renew your Guild membership!

Program Meeting

Zines! Zines! Zines!

Presented by Vanessa DeWolf

Sunday April 21, 2-4pm

On Zoom

Watch for Zoom link invitation on Friday April 19th

Vanessa will give a brief introduction to the eclectic and diverse history of the Zine (What is a Zine? How long have people been making Zines? How'd Vanessa begin making them? Where can I get a zines? Are there places I can submit my zine? etc.) This is a very accessible and straightforward form which has a dynamic history, both in the world and in Vanessa’s personal artmaking life.

In this program, there will be some guided participation. Please bring a few sheets of paper (raiding your recycling is great for this) and a pen or a pencil whichever you prefer. We will be doing some writing and some drawing (very simple).

Northwoods Book Arts Guild

ABC Challenge

Inspired by Robert Bolick’s ABC book collection, NBG members are invited to make their own alphabet-themed books. Any structure/format/medium related to book arts is welcome! This will be a slow paced, stress-free project that will culminate as a display in the BOOKS AS ART 4 exhibition at the Bear Gallery taking place in June 2025.

To check out Robert’s blog, visit http://books-on-books.com

All members of NBG are invited to sign up for this challenge! There is no fee to

participate, and we will hold optional meet ups (virtual or in-person) to discuss

ideas and share our progress.

Bookmaking: Soft Cover Coptic Journal

Instructor: Margo Klass

Friday, May 31, 6 - 8:30 pm

Saturday and Sunday, June 1 & 2, 10am - 4pm

Workshop Full, Waitlist Only

This structure highlights all the elegance and appeal of Coptic binding without cutting,

covering, and attaching hard board covers. The soft covers are constructed of heavy

paper wrapped around an inner support making them sturdy and much more easily

sewn to the text block. A collaged composition of stones and twigs embellish the cover,

each object sewn on using a Japanese-inspired technique. This journal is casual enough

for daily writing and sketching, and unique enough to serve as guest book for a special

event.

We are planning a test run during the month of April to open the studio on Sundays from 3 to 5pm. Beginning Sunday April 7th, the studio will be open to shop Paper Birches, browse the library, develop ideas and work on projects.

We also now have Wi-Fi at the Studio!

We know that Sunday may not be the best time for our members so we are asking you to complete a survey (click the button below) to help us meet your needs.

UA Museum of the North

Thinking Made Visible Exhibit

Opens April 27, 2024

Thinking Made Visible is a UAMN special exhibition exploring the human instinct to express thought through line, form, and color. It is an immersion in possibility and process – honoring and encouraging the practice of slowing down and spending time with an idea, an object, a place.

Perception, communication, and invention are explored through nature journals and cartoons, maps and scientific fieldnotes, architectural, art, and exhibit design – memory and sensory experience given form by the humble sketchbook.

Members of NBG have participated in the planning of this exciting exhibition. Look for NBG book artists in the show!

The exhibition opens on April 27, 2024 and runs through January 5, 2025.
