AUGUST 2023
Hello Bookmakers,

Summer always seems to go by so quickly. We make plans to have outdoor adventures to take advantage of the weather and long days. We also want to find time to create or perhaps relax with a great book, especially if it is raining! My summer book adventure this year is to master the Coptic stitch. This is a sewn binding that allows for the book to lay flat when open. Margo Klass has taught this binding several times for our guild. I have taken her class numerous times, but I am striving to get it perfect. So, I took her class again. I am now making my third Coptic book this summer and hope to start another one soon. As they say, practice makes perfect. Continue reading the newsletter to find out more about this type of binding and a new special interest group focused on Coptic binding.

As always planning is underway for fall classes and events and we will have a full schedule. Read the newsletter, check the website, or come visit during open studio on Wednesdays from 12 – 2pm to stay informed.

I hope to see you in an upcoming class or in an open studio.

Sewing On Frames
with Ashley Thayer

Sunday August 20th, 10-2pm
and
Sunday August 27th, 10-2pm

Members $120, Guests $145
Materials fee: $15
Location: NBG Studio

This is an introduction or refresher class to the historic technique of sewing books on cords with the help of a sewing frame. On day one of this two part class, we will look over examples of antique books and learn the history behind them. We’ll then learn how to set up the sewing frame and create a working model to practice our new skills! On day two, participants will have gathered their own materials and have a design prepared in order to sew and bind a unique creation. Some basic bookbinding experience is recommended, sewing frames available for use at the NBG Studio.
Coptic Binders Meet
in NBG Studio

In the late afternoon of July 10th an eager group of Coptic binders gathered in the NBG Studio to share the pleasures - and the challenges - of learning Coptic binding. Inspired by a beginning Coptic workshop taught by Margo Klass in late spring, and organized by Coptic binder Rebecca Morse, these monthly gatherings are scheduled to continue into the fall and beyond. The main purpose of these sessions is to practice the skill of Coptic binding, but added benefits include mutual mentoring and admiring our completed books. For some in the group the sessions are also preparation for the Coptic II workshop scheduled in October. Pre-cut book boards, packaged in pairs, are available in two sizes in Paper Birches.

See the calendar below for scheduled dates. All Coptic binders are welcome!

NBG Members' Hornbooks travel to Oxford, England!

Robert Bolick, a book collector and curator from Oxford, England showed great interest in the Northwoods Book Arts Guild Hornbook Project. He has selected Ashley Thayer's Runic Hornbook, Connie Stricks' A Cuneiform Hornbook, and Margo Klass' AI inspired Takeover to be a part of a wonderful show called Alphabets Alive! at the Bodleian Library in Oxford (yes, THE Bodleian Library!!) This is huge news for the NBG Hornbook Project which humbly began around a year ago. Read the Press Release and visit Robert's blog to see the full scope of this show. The NBG Guild is going places and doing amazing things!!

Ashley Thayer will be traveling to Oxford along with her daughter to visit the show, tour the library, and hopefully meet with Robert Bolick. Upon their return, she hopes to give a presentation of the trip to share with NBG members.

View the three NBG Member Hornbooks and more on Robert's Blog.
