December 2023

Hello Bookmakers,

As the saying goes “it’s that time of year” - HALLOTHANKSMAS - surely a made-up name to summarize the season. I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving.  I have a lot to be thankful for – this book guild is one of things to be thankful for. We are involved in making our own books as well as books and services we share and donate to the community. I am thankful for our Board of Directors, the Advisory Council, and Committee Members who donate their time to make the guild a wonderful community enterprise. Again, I hope you will consider becoming a member of our NBG Board.

We finished two major projects in the month of November, our First Friday event and our Jacob’s Ladder Art-o-Mat project. We now move on to planning classes for 2024, a new Art-o-Mat project, the Fairbanks Antique Auto Museum project, and many more in 2024.

Please mark your calendars our 2024 NBG ANNUAL MEETING is Sunday, January 21, at the Lions Club building on the Fairgrounds. This will be the time to renew your membership, review the calendar for 2024 and participate in our auction. Last year’s annual meeting was lovely and so well organized by our Advisory Council. It will be an event not to be missed.

As always, I hope to see you at our open studio on Wednesdays from noon until 2:00pm. There are only two Wednesdays in December that we will be open – December 6 and 13. We will be closed and re-open in the new year on Wednesday, January 10, 2024.

Art-o-Mat Project Updates

After ten months our Jacobs Ladder books are done! They are boxed and shipped to the Art-o-Mat headquarters in North Carolina. This Art-o Mat project was designed and led by Oralee Nudson based on an initial prototype created by Margo Klass. A group of about 15 guild members have been meeting since February 2023 to construct 100 of these small gems. The guild will keep 10 to put into our Fairbanks Art-o-Mat machine – will you be one of the lucky ones to get "Margo’s Magic Kinetic Illusion"?

A new Art-o-Mat project is underway! Thank you to everyone who answered the call to create a haiku for our next project. A prototype along with the colophon and label is in progress and soon to be sent for review. Once this first step is complete, we will again ask for volunteers to help create this little book of haiku. The paper and book cloth have been ordered. We will use the Northwoods Letterpress equipment to print our haiku for the book. If you are interested in letterpress and setting type, this is a good beginner project. Stay tuned for updates in the New Year for opportunities to participate.
