Dear NBG Community,
On behalf of the NBG Board, I extend sincere appreciation for the generous support of 48 new and renewing members who made contributions in January. Your donations make it possible for the Northwoods Books Arts Guild to meet its mission and expand its offerings. It’s great to begin 2021 with four dozen members. Thank you! Thank you! New and renewing members are welcome at any time. Access membership information by clicking the button below.
As you will see in this month’s newsletter, NBG is launching Book Arts Basics. Thanks to the diligent efforts of two board members, Corlis Taylor and Laurel Herbeck, we received a generous grant from the Alaska State Council on the Arts. The ASCA Grant has provided funds to purchase equipment (cameras, microphones, lights, tripods, hardware for internet setup) and subscribe to 5G WiFi service so instructors can teach classes from our NBG Studio. As we continue to host all of our classes and meetings online, these additions will make it possible for us to improve our presence and performance on Zoom.
Series 1: Getting Started is the first set of offerings in a series of Book Arts Basics workshops that will continue through 2021. The Grant allows us to offer this series of classes at a reasonable cost and to provide kits that include all the necessary tools and materials free of charge. These two-hour classes are a wonderful opportunity for curious folks to try something new without investing a lot of time and resources. (Scholarship support is available through NBG’s Marilyn Askelin Scholarship Fund.) The three classes in Series 1 are tailored for beginners and are detailed below. In Series 1, students will learn the fundamentals of book arts. If you know of anyone who may be interested in learning how to make handmade books, please share this opportunity with them. All the pertinent information and sign-up links are included in this newsletter. Your NBG Board is in the process of planning the next two series that will include a variety of sewn and glued bindings relevant to new and experienced book artists. We have partnered with The Folk School to launch Book Arts Basics. We are grateful for their expertise and willingness to handle registration.
As we continue navigating year two of the coronavirus, we will be looking for ways to enliven book arts in our lives. As you read through this newsletter, you will see some new opportunities to engage in other book art events. As always, we welcome your questions, suggestions, and ideas.
Warmest regards,
Susan Campbell
NBG President
