Newsletter

February 2024

Hello Book Artists,

Thank you to everyone who made it to our annual meeting in January. It was a cold day but twenty-three people braved the cold to hear about the progress our Guild has made over the last year. We had a great auction and lots of visiting with friends. We plan to have another auction in May during the Tiny Book Party.

We have several ongoing projects in 2024 and several new projects to begin this year. The list includes the Fairbanks Antique Auto Museum collaboration and June show, The Art-o-Mat Haiku Letterpress books, The UAF Museum Journals, Letterpress Broadsides, Alphabet books (see the February Program Meeting description below), and NBG as the Guest Artist for the month of October at Two Street Gallery in downtown Fairbanks. All these projects provide opportunities for our members to engage by making books, learning letterpress, or volunteering to participate in an activity.

Please remember to renew your membership for 2024. Your membership dues provide a benefit to both you and the Guild. Visit our website nwbookarts.org to renew your membership online.

Please review the newsletter to keep up to date with everything that is happening this month. Happy Heart month.

NBG Workshop

Layered Accordion

Instructor: Connie Stricks

Saturday, February 24, 2024

9:30am - 4:30pm

Workshop Fees: Members $105, Guests $140

Materials Fee: $25

This small but elegant book structure is a combination of simple devices—accordion folds, windows, and the pamphlet stitch. It is constructed in layers and woven together, giving it visual and sculptural complexity. Your choice of collaged additions provides personal imagery. Cover boards, wrapped with paper, complete the project. The model constructed at the beginning of class will provide the basis for understanding the mechanics of the structure and becomes a reference for our second book and for using this structure for future projects.

Tools & Materials

Participants Bring*: Awl, bone or Teflon folder, cutting mat with grid (18” x 24”), fine line pencil and eraser, glue papers, scoring tool, rulers (two 2” x 18”; one 3” or 3.5” x 18” -plastic quilters rulers are recommended), bumper, small needle nose pliers, steel measuring rules, X-acto knife or utility knife with extra blades, scissors

NBG Workshop

Traditional Cased-in Bookbinding

Instructor: Tyson Rinio

Saturday & Sunday, March 2 & 3

12 - 3pm

UAF Rasmuson Library, Book Repair Lab

Workshop Fees: Members $120, Guests $150

Materials Fee: $20

Workshop Limited to 4 participants

Early registration is appreciated.

This workshop will focus on creating a traditionally bound book using vintage bindery equipment. Signatures will be assembled by cutting, folding, and trimming parent sheets of paper. The text block will be sewn on linen tapes, then cased into a cloth-bound cover with a rounded and backed spine. A title will be added using a hot foil stamping machine.

The class will take place in the book repair lab of UAF’s Rasmuson Library where students will be introduced to the equipment and practices of a classically trained book binder. Due to limited table space the class will be limited to to 4 participants; this will also allow for ample one-on-one attention. The cased-in codex created in class will serve as a model for future projects.

A list of materials and tools will be emailed to registered participants.
