Newsletter

January 2024

Hello Bookmakers,

Happy New Year! The new year is a time when we think about renewing our annual membership to the guild and making resolutions for the year. But, instead of resolutions, how about setting a personal theme for 2024. I was reading an article in the Bound and Lettered magazine: volume 18, number 3, and the author took part in a series of 100-day challenges, and she set a theme for each year of the challenge. This got me thinking about my book arts practice and setting a theme for the year. Perhaps I could focus on a color I would like to work with to create a series of books or, filling one page a day in one of my many blank Coptic books. The theme would be the art of the blank page, I could write, sketch, doodle, write an observation etc. each day or I could make it easy on myself and say once a week. What will your theme be for 2024? The possibilities are endless.

I would like to remind you about two upcoming events in January. First, Designs on paper: Mark Making class on Saturday, January 20th and the NBG Annual Meeting will be Sunday, January 21st. Keep reading the newsletter for information about both events.

After a short break Open Studio is open again on Wednesday, January 10th. There are several opportunities to connect with each other this month and I hope to see you in January.

This small but elegant book structure is a combination of simple devices—accordion folds, windows, and the pamphlet stitch. It is constructed in layers and woven together, giving it visual and sculptural complexity. Your choice of collaged additions provides personal imagery. Cover boards, wrapped with paper, complete the project. The model constructed at the beginning of class will provide the basis for understanding the mechanics of the structure and becomes a reference for our second book and for using this structure for future projects.

Book Repair Inquiries

Lately, we have received quite a few inquiries about restoring or repairing damaged books. Fortunately, there is a protocol in place to address these requests. Community outreach is an important part of Northwoods Book Arts Guild’s mission and one facet of this outreach is the NBG Book Repair Team, six dedicated members who volunteer twice a month at the Literacy Council. The team typically repairs books that are donated to the Literacy Council to be sold in the Forget-Me-Not Book Store, but they also undertake special book repair requests from members of the public. The money generated from special book repairs goes to the Literacy Council to support their valuable work in our community.

Jackie Stormer, our liaison at the Literacy Council, handles all questions and requests for book repairs. Please email her at jackie@literacycouncilak.org. She will communicate with you and the Book Repair Team about your request and then give you a quote for the cost of materials and repairs.
