June 2024

Letter from the (Vice) President:

I’m honored to greet you this month as we begin the busy summer season! We have entered 72 days of non-stop daylight; time to celebrate what keeps us in Fairbanks. The other thing that has kept me here for almost half a century is the vibrant arts community. Summer is the perfect time to participate in all the opportunities Fairbanks has to offer.

None are more exciting than our own classes, events and exhibits. We just celebrated the annual Tiny Book Party, attended by 27 book artists and guests. The addition this year of guest artists Bev Byington and Sandra Westcott, who shared their work in lettering was a great start to the ABC Challenge, an opportunity to create individual work based on an alphabet or join a group project to make an “alphabet quilt”.

Workshops this month include Vanessa’s Zine class and Sandra’s Zentangle class. If you’ve never made a “Zine”-(a self published mini magazine) you will be totally inspired to create several in this class. Sandra’s Zentangle class will be a further dive into the Zentangle method of pen and ink drawing, lettering, and design. Both of these classes still have spaces available and are a great way to have fun and learn something new this summer.

NBG exhibits start with the FAAM show “Contemporary Meets Vintage”, a collaboration between our Guild and the Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum on Thursday June 6, from 5:30-7:30pm at the museum. A catalog of the show will be available for sale and the show will be up all month, so bring your guests to this must-see Fairbanks destination and introduce them to book arts. This event is one of the many ways our Guild partners with other groups in the community.

The NBG June 20th Program Meeting will also take place at the Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum and will feature artist talks by those who created works for the "Contemporary Meets Vintage" exhibition. Due to space limitations this meeting will be for NBG members only, and require a reservation to attend. You will receive a special email with details a week before the meeting. Save the date: Thursday, June 20, 5:30 to 7:30pm.

Other great summer events include the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival in July, the Farmer’s Market and the Tanana Valley State Fair in August. The fair is another opportunity to enter your book arts creations.

Finally, summer is a relaxing time to create books for our upcoming show at 2 Street Gallery in October. Oralee is heading up this event and will provide information throughout the summer. Don’t forget Open Studios on Wednesdays this summer. Hang out with fellow book artists, visit the Paper Birches store and create work for upcoming shows.

This will be a slow paced, stress-free project that will culminate as a display in the BOOKS AS ART 4 exhibition at the Bear Gallery taking place in June 2025.

All members of NBG are invited to sign up for this challenge! There is no fee to

Fleckland Studio (at Well Street Art Co)

Working with scissors, tape, gluesticks, paper, pencils, pens, collage materials and our imaginations we'll make many zines in the course of the afternoon. We'll be working in black & white (grayscale). Vanessa will have both her scanner and laser printer for our use. She will guide exercises for writing, drawing, mark-making and collaging. This class is spontaneous, easy-breasy, no expertise is needed. There will be a combination of group, collaborative activity and independent, self-directed activity with lots of discussion, brainstorming, and generating. Vanessa intends to give you lots of processes for initiating content and making zines. For the last half hour we'll look at places you can submit your zines, zinefests to go to, and places you can trade/buy and find zines.

UA Museum of the North

Thinking Made Visible Exhibit

Open through Sunday, January 5, 2025

Thinking Made Visible is a UAMN special exhibition exploring the human instinct to express thought through line, form, and color. It is an immersion in possibility and process – honoring and encouraging the practice of slowing down and spending time with an idea, an object, a place.

Perception, communication, and invention are explored through nature journals and cartoons, maps and scientific fieldnotes, architectural, art, and exhibit design – memory and sensory experience given form by the humble sketchbook.

Members of NBG have participated in the planning of this exciting exhibition. Look for NBG book artists in the show!

Join the American Bookbinders Museum in a conversation with panelists Elizabeth Curren, Sara Press (Deeply Game Publications), and Rebecca Chamlee (Pie in the Sky Press). We will discuss a variety of ways nature influences bookbinding. Ranging from the integration of natural materials such as bones and leaves to taking inspiration from nature in design elements like pattern and form. Learn about their process in more on

Saturday, June 15th at 11:00 am PST.

$10 per attendee, registration

All webinars are recorded with a recording sent to ticket holders following the event.
