November 2023

Hello Bookmakers,

The NBG Board of Directors and various committees have been busy planning for upcoming activities and events. Our Exhibition committee is exploring several future exhibit ideas, and the Education committee along with the Board are planning program meetings, workshops, and classes for 2024. We are looking at ways to streamline our class registration process, researching new tools and equipment for the studio, and preliminary work is underway to become our own 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. There are so many opportunities ahead for our Guild and we are always looking for input and volunteers to help move the Guild forward.

Our annual meeting is in January (exact date to be announced soon) and is the time to renew memberships, review the calendar for 2024, sign-up for a committee, and elect new Board members. Please give serious consideration to becoming a Board member. This Guild works because the members get involved and participate at some level. The Board sets the direction for the Guild. If you have ideas on what we should be doing and how we do it, please think about joining us. We are a fun group and I have become closer to so many of my fellow Board members. I enjoy working with all of them.

As always, I want to thank you for attending our program meetings, coming to open studio, and sharing your ideas with me. I hope to see you at open studio or any of our upcoming events.

NBG Letterpress

Haiku Project

Call for Participation

A recent Letterpress Haiku class taught by Bruce Campbell inspired a streamlined design for a new Art-o-Mat project. In an effort to encourage participation of local artists in Art-o-Mat art, NBG members plan to print original haiku poems written by NBG members on each side of heavy paper using the letterpress equipment. Folds and pop out slits are made, and covers are added. The finished product and a Colophon are fit into a decorated box then shipped to Art-o-Mat Headquarters for distribution to machines around the nation.

How can you help? First, we need people to write one or more Haiku poems. Later we will need help to cut paper, set type, cover board with book cloth, and fold and assemble the books. There are many ways to be involved!

If you would like to write a Haiku the topic is open for any ideas you might have!!! The formula for your verse is 5 syllables on the first line, 7 syllables on the second line, and 5 syllables on the third line.

The following is a Haiku written by NBG member Caroline Wolf:

Letterpress rolling.

Then golden words come to life.

Dreams become a book.

Please send your Haiku to Sherrill Peterson. Also, if you haven’t had the privilege of using the letter press equipment or have questions, please contact Sherrill Peterson.

NBG First Friday Event

NBG's First Friday event was held on November 3 at the 1504 Gilliam Way event space. The event was organized to showcase our Hornbook project and sell handmade books and book related products. It was also an opportunity for the Guild to invite the community of Fairbanks to glimpse part of our book arts world.

A large crowd was on hand to view, learn about and purchase some of our art. The Hornbooks were the star of the show, and it was fun to watch as people toured and commented on the work they saw. Positive comments and high praise for the artists' work could be overheard throughout the space. It was a great celebration of book arts in Fairbanks.
