Newsletter
OCTOBER 2021
Dear NBG Community,
Anticipation has been building and we’re almost there ⏤ only three weeks until  the opening of Books as Art 3. I’d like to reiterate something I wrote in last month’s newsletter because I feel so passionately about this: The depth and breadth of our show depends on the participation of our members. Whether you have been a longtime member of NBG or if you have just taken your first class in last spring’s Book Arts Basic Series, my hope is that each of us will embrace this opportunity to share our work. This has been a difficult year in so many ways and when I think of coming together in creative celebration I feel enlivened.

Samantha Reynolds, executive director of North Star Ballet, recently wrote an evocative Community Perspective piece in the Daily News Miner, October 4, 2021. She eloquently expressed the role of art in our lives: “The fractures inflicted by the pandemic are widespread and the world will no doubt feel the repercussions of this crisis for years to come. But in these broken places — where our humanity lost its way or despair threatened to overwhelm us — we find the artists…Up and down the centuries, the power of the arts has drawn people of different creeds, political views and generations into a shared admiration. In its vibrancy and complexity, art reminds us of our humanity, our deep longing for beauty, and our desire to be drawn into mystery.”

I believe Books as Art 3 will embody Ms. Reynold’s sentiment, offer beauty and the delightful wonder of artist books to our Fairbanks community. I imagine a wide spectrum of handcrafted book forms on display, a collection that will exemplify the creativity and imagination of NBG artists...You! As a reminder, all the entry categories are listed in the Books As Art 3 section below. Two events have been planned to celebrate our show, on November 5 and 19. Please see the calendar below for details about these special hybrid gatherings. (The previously planned Exhibition Opening on Nov. 5 has been changed to a Facebook Live event to meet the current pandemic protocols in the Bear Gallery.)

Please join me, bring your books to the Bear Gallery on Sunday, October 31, 12-6pm. (This is a change from the original guidelines.)  When you bring your books, please bring a completed InTake Form for each one. (Click on the button below to print the Exhibition Intake Form. Copies are also available at the NBG studio, open on Wednesdays, 12-4pm.)

Coinciding with our show, NBG will be featured as the Gift Shop Artist of the Month. Members will be able to display their work for sale in a dedicated space in the gift shop. When you bring your items, please bring a completed InTake Form. (Click on the button below to print the Gift Shop Intake Form. Copies are also available at the NBG studio, open on Wednesdays, 12-4pm.)

I’m looking forward to seeing you at InTake and at our special events. Together we will make Books As Art 3 a memorable success for our Guild.

Warmest regards,
Susan Campbell
NBG President
