Newsletter
September 2024
| |
Hello Book Artists,
The newsletter team is back to writing after a short summer break. The September NBG newsletter is full of information about our upcoming events and activities.
There are two things to be aware of for the month of September. Our Program Meeting is scheduled for Sunday the 22nd. It will be a full meeting hosted on Zoom with presentations and conversation around the topic of how to price your artwork and book art conference reports. Also this month on the 29th is the day to turn in your artwork for our Guest Artist of the Month and First Friday exhibit at 2 Street Gallery opening October 4th. Remember anything you enter into the show must be for sale so the program meeting topic on pricing your work will hopefully be helpful for you.
We will begin having Open Studio sessions on the 2nd Sunday of every month beginning with Sunday, September 8th from 1:00 to 3:00pm. Laurel Herbeck will be your host, please stop by. It is a great opportunity to share what you are working on, ask questions, share ideas, browse our library and purchase needed supplies or tools at Paper Birches. Open Studio Sunday edition will continue on October 13, November 10 and finish the year on Sunday, December 8. Wednesday, Open studio continues every Wednesday from noon to 2:00pm.

Newport Paper Book Arts Festival and Focus On Book Arts
First, Bruce Campbell will introduce the Provisional Press, a new opportunity for our members to add printed images and texts to their artist books. See article below for more information about the Provisional Press.
Next we will focus on the challenge of pricing your handmade books for the retail market. This moderated panel will discuss different perspectives as each member talks about the elements that go into their process of setting prices.
Lastly, NBG members will share structures created and techniques learned during recent workshops at FOBA and the Newport Book Arts Festival. Samples will be shown during our Zoom program and then displayed at the studio for personal examination during Open Studio sessions. Join us to see what new ideas we brought home.

Provisional Press
for Image and Text Printing
Introducing the newest addition to the Northwoods Book Arts Guild’s Letterpress Studio is a Provisional Press. The Provisional Press is a cylinder press sold as a kit that one assembles with glue and simple wood screws. See: ProvisionalPress.com
Similar in function to much more expensive proof presses, AKA poster presses such as a Vandercook Model 01 ($2,795) or a Morgan Line-O-Scribe (M771, $995), The Provisional Press is a lightweight, easy to handle, and easy to operate press for $200 to $230.
Book Artists can consider using a provision press to create graphic images or printed text. Images can be carved in vinyl, linoleum, or Shina wood available for purchase through Paper Birches. Text can be set in type and locked in a galley (Bruce is available to help.) It is also possible to set patterns using P22 blocks, and likely much more.
The NBG Provisional Press is ready for you to use. Bruce is available to schedule time so you can print with the press. In addition, Bruce Campbell and Sara Tabbert are offering a class at The Folk School Fairbanks where you can build your own press, tentatively scheduled for November 7 - 9.

Blue Ribbon Books!
Congratulations to Guild members Margo Klass and Corlis Taylor who won blue ribbons and a red ribbon for their books entered into the Creative Arts Division of the 2024 Tanana Valley State Fair. It was the first time NBG was represented at the Fair, and hopefully the beginning of a tradition! It’s a great way to let the public know about the world of book arts that exists right here in our own community.

NBG Board Member Ashley Thayer
wins Prestigious Award!
“A book fit for a queen!” That’s how Ashley’s book was described by a juror of the 2024 International Bookbinding Competition sponsored by the Society of Bookbinders Society. Ashley was awarded the ABA Educational Trust Award for Historic Binding at a ceremony that took place in York, England where she received the award in person.
The label identified her book as “Embroidered Binding” which identifies the technique she used to embellish the covers and spine of her book, but lacks information about the elegance and charm of its imagery. Inspired by 17th century embroidery motifs, Ashley’s designs are variations of a rose-like flower whose stem, buds, and leaves delicately fill the bordered spaces on the book’s covers and spine.
A New York collector is now the lucky owner of this delightful book.
Congratulations, Ashley!
