Little Things Mean a Lot – our new weekly series where we explore the meaning of various ceramic terms and what they mean for brickmakers.
John Sanders, NBRC Director
Terminology related to masonry materials (clay brick included) is standardized in ASTM C1232 – Standard Terminology for Masonry. This may not seem that interesting on the surface, but it is important to remember that by standardizing the definitions of terms like coring, thickness or width, to name a few, we standardize the production, sales and use of our product. Having clearly defined terms helps us to avoid confusion between producers, specifiers and consumers. ASTM Committee C15 on Manufactured Masonry Units develops and maintains these definitions.
