2021 Southern Regional 4-H Horse Show Results
The NC 4-H Horse Program was well represented across all divisions at the recent Southern Regional 4-H Horse Championships that were held in Perry, GA. Twenty-eight exhibitors represented North Carolina in the horse show and eighteen North Carolina 4-H’ers competed in the educational contests.

2021 Horse Show Results
The 2021 NC 4-H State Horse Show was held July 7–11 at the James B. Hunt Horse Complex on the NC State Fairgrounds in Raleigh, NC. Two Hundred and Twenty-Five exhibitors representing 5 districts and 39 counties competed in over 160 classes and 21 different divisions. Special thanks to our major, division, and class sponsors that made this event possible!

2021 Alumni Showmanship Results
During the Saturday evening program of the 2021 NC 4-H State Horse Show, the second annual Alumni Showmanship class was held. Fifteen NC 4-H Horse Program Alumni battled it out to win three prizes: Class Champion, Sponsorship Challenge Winner, and Most Fly Alumni. $2536 was raised for the NC 4-H Horse Program Emergency Fund. This fund provides financial assistance to deserving NC 4-H’ers so they can participate in educational events and shows.
Rockingham County 4-H alumnae Laura Sheets, and Fort Knox were the overall class winners. Reserve class champion honors went to former Wake county Jammin’ Hooves leader Bill Crouse. Mr. Bill clogged his pattern to Rocky Top! Nick Benzick, also from Wake County, made a generous donation and was the sponsorship challenge winner. Alaina Cross anonymously performed her pattern in a very furry and large pig costume and earned the title of Most Fly Alumni.
Thank you to all that participated and we cannot wait to see what everyone brings to the table in 2022!

2021 Junior Sportsmanship Winner:
Addison Taylor, Union County
The Junior Sportsmanship Award winner has been consistently described by her peers as always going out of her way to make everyone feel included and that nobody feels left out. She is kind-hearted, always willingly helping others even if they don’t ask. She encourages her club mates, going above and beyond to help new members to the club feel included and show them the ropes. She is truly an example of youth leadership in 4-H.

2021 Senior Sportsmanship Winner:
Lauren Bivins, Rockingham County
The Senior Sportsmanship winner is aging out this year, but has always been a very encouraging and helpful presence in her club. Right before the state show, her horse had an injury and was unable to come for her last show. Instead of being discouraged, she has still cheered her fellow 4-Hers on with radiating energy. Even though she was unable to show in versatility (her favorite class), she instead helped as a groom, with an enthusiastic smile on her face.

2021 Candace Norman Service Award Recipients
During the Opening Ceremonies of the 2021 NC 4-H State Horse Show, the Youth and Adult Candace Norman Volunteer Awards were presented. These awards are sponsored by the North Central District, in memory of long-time NC 4-H Horse Program and Orange county volunteer, Candance Norman. They are given annually to a 4-H youth member and adult volunteer who exhibit true dedication to and embodies all the characteristics and morals of 4-H – a well-rounded person who strives to make the community a better place through example and leadership.
Youth Recipient: Savannah Lindsey, Cumberland
Savannah Lindsey has been an active 4-H member in Cumberland County for the past 6 years. She is a wonderful role model and maintains a strong passion for helping others through community service. Savannah has volunteered many hours of her time helping younger students learn how to ride and train their own horses. She has assisted her 4-H club leader when they share their horses with the local Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops, assists with the Falcon Children’s Home riding program and is also a coach for the Special Olympics Equestrian Team. The younger 4-Hers in her club are very fortunate because she helped coach them in horse bowl, hippology, and horse judging. Her 4-H Agent stated her passion and commitment to serving others has been an inspiration to all.
Adult Recipient: Matthew McVey, Rockingham
Matthew McVey is a Rockingham County 4-H volunteer who “married” into the 4-H horse program but from day one he was Kountry Kids 4-H club’s biggest fan. He is always willing to jump in and help on the club, county, district, and state levels. He is always running around making sure things run smoothly. His wife says he is the brains behind the 4-H club, keeping the books and bringing so many great ideas to the table. Matthew is very deserving of this award and Candace would be proud of the influence he has on our young 4-H members.

2021 Inaugural Achievement Award Recipients
The NC 4-H Horse Program Achievement Award is an annual application/submission of accomplishments within 4-H, with a specific focus on horse program achievements that is cumulative beginning with the applicant’s first year in the horse program. Award levels are on a points-based system that groups like activities completed based on the level of involvement and ranks them. The following youth completed a 2021 application to earn their level and patch.

2021 Communications Contest Winners
The 2021 NC 4-H Horse Program Communications Contests were held in conjunction with the 2021 Virtual 4-H Congress. Contestants participated in virtual district activity days to qualify for the state event. Video submissions of presentations and public speeches were evaluated by a panel of judges. Congratulations to the following individuals that earned top honors in this year’s event.

Rules & Regulations Manual Rule Change Proposals due October 1
The North Carolina 4-H Horse Program Advisory Council encourages any suggestions to make the North Carolina 4-H Horse Program reach its fullest potential in meeting the 4-H Horse Project Goals. The opportunity to propose new rules or changes to existing rules allows 4-H Horse Program members and supporters to voice their ideas about how to improve our program. The following people are eligible to submit a rule change proposal to the North Carolina 4-H Horse Program Rules and Regulations Manual: 4-H members Parents/guardians of 4-H members 4-H volunteers 4-H agents All proposals are due by October 1 of each year. Submitted rule changes and suggestions will be reviewed for the following year. The proposal form must be completed in its entirety to be considered.

APHA Youth Judging Contest
Four NC 4-H’ers represented the Carolina Paint Horse Club at the 2021 American Paint Horse Youth Association World Show Judging Contest in Fort Worth, Texas. Madison Rosenbaum, Abi Burgess, EmmaRose Church and Savannah Lindsey were the fifth high overall team. In addition, they were fourth in halter, seventh in performance, and third in reasons. EmmaRose was seventh high individual in halter and ninth in reasons. Madison was tenth place in halter and reasons.

Introductory Horse Judging Short Course- REGISTRATION OPEN
This short course is designed for individuals with limited horse show judging experience, coaches of youth judging teams, FFA instructors, and all individuals interested in becoming judges or in attending the Open Horse Show Judges Certification Clinic. Emphasis will be placed on teaching the judging systems appropriate for judging various classes in the western, hunt seat, saddle seat, and non-trotting divisions. Participants will have a unique opportunity to interact one-on-one with experts to improve their judging expertise while learning the judging techniques taught at North Carolina State University, whose 4-H teams have earned numerous national and world judging contest championships. Participants will receive a judging manual and judge a variety of video classes in a classroom setting. Participants will also receive in-depth instruction on the judging systems specifically designed to train intercollegiate and youth judging teams and horse show judges.
Fee: The fee for the two-day clinic is $115.00. Registration must be completed by October 10, 2021, to avoid a $25 late fee. Registration fees are refundable if requested in writing prior to the event. Substitutions for pre-registered participants will be accepted.

Open Horse Show Judges' Certification Clinic- REGISTRATION OPEN
Announcing the 38th Annual North Carolina Open Horse Show Judges Certification Clinic on North Carolina State University’s Main Campus in Raleigh, NC. This clinic is designed to provide individuals who are, or aspire to be, horse show judges with practical “hands-on” experience in judging saddle seat, hunt seat, non-trotting and western classes. Participating judges will have an opportunity to judge 20-27 conformation and performance classes, complete a required 20-25 question exam in each of the four divisions, and receive certification in these four divisions. A panel of breed recognized professional judges from across the nation will discuss the class placings and present lectures on judging procedures. Individuals completing the clinic will be included on a list of suggested horse show judges that will be annually revised and distributed to open horse show organizations located in North Carolina and surrounding states. Judges receiving an average score of 90% or higher per show division will be certified for that respective division. A minimum of 33% of participating judges will be certified in each division. Certification will be awarded separately for each division. A judging list will be forwarded upon request to breed associations for applicant judges and horse show organizations throughout the United States. Participation in the NCSU Horse Judging Short Course is highly recommended but not required for individuals new to the judging experience.
Fees: Advanced registration is $75/day for participating judges (19 years and older). This fee includes all instruction, certification examinations, and inclusion on the 2021 NC Open Horse Judges Certification List, as desired. A $15 late fee/day will be assessed to judging participants registering after the deadline date. Judges’ refunds will be honored if received in writing prior to November 19, 2021.
