NCA COR WORKSHOP SERIES

“I enjoyed this training session very much. I have gained the knowledge I require to assist me when I begin my COR four-element audit for my NCSO renewal. This presentation showed me the detail involved in completing this audit. Scott showed us the layout of the AUDITSOFT tool that all documentation is to be uploaded to. His training style is very informative and in a casual setting. Scott shared lots of information from his years of experience, I highly recommend attending his training sessions!”

“The workshop Facilitator, Mr. Halling is a huge asset to any company either already COR certified, in the process of or considering obtaining certification. His knowledge of the COR program was above and beyond my expectations. I am definitely looking forward to the remaining workshop training opportunities.”

The COR WORKSHOP SERIES returns on September 10th for the 3rd quarter session.

Beat the Heat: What Are Ontario’s OHSA Requirements for Working in the Heat?

Recently, sweltering summer heat settled over parts of Canada, especially in Ontario. There is good reason to believe that this will happen again this summer, and will impact both workers who are outside in the sun and those who work indoors. While there are currently no specific occupational health and safety requirements for employers in Ontario to manage the heat, they do still have legal duties in this area. And more may be coming in the near future. Click Here

Ticks in Niagara

In the Niagara region, both American dog ticks and blacklegged ticks are found, but only blacklegged ticks can transmit Lyme disease. The blacklegged tick is also known as the deer tick. Lyme disease is caused by bacteria carried by blacklegged ticks and can be serious if left untreated.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:

American Dog Tick:

  • This is the most common tick in Niagara, but it does not carry the Lyme disease bacteria.

Blacklegged Tick (Deer Tick):

  • This tick can transmit Lyme disease, but it needs to be attached for more than 24 hours to transmit the bacteria.

Lyme Disease:

  • Caused by the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi, Lyme disease is transmitted through the bite of an infected blacklegged tick.

Construction Death Review (CDR) Annual Report - July 2025

The Office of the Chief Coroner has released Ontario’s first Construction Death Review (CDR) Annual Report, examining 26 tragic fall-from-height fatalities in the construction industry between 2017 and 2023. This new collaborative review process, involving government, labour, employer, and safety stakeholders, replaces the former inquest system to deliver more timely and system-focused safety recommendations.

Five key focus areas emerged: strengthening health and safety compliance, improving supervision and training, educating homeowners and small businesses, and incorporating real-life case studies in training. The report is a crucial call to action to address falls from heights—still a leading cause of construction-related deaths.

Stakeholders are encouraged to read the full report and explore how they can support these life-saving recommendations.

OHCOW: Tools and research supporting occupational health in Ontario

New at the Occupational Health Clinics for Ontario Workers (OHCOW):

Humidex-based Heat Response Plan: During extreme heat events, such as heat domes, the Humidex –indoors or outdoors– can exceed 45. OHCOW has developed a Humidex-based Heat Response Plan to help workplaces assess when to modify or suspend work. The resource includes a video by Occupational Hygienist John Oudyk explaining Time Weighted Average Humidex calculations.

Specialized professional service

There are two specialized professional service campaigns in 2025–2026: worker exposure to chemical agents in the workplace and WHMIS training based on the amended Hazardous Products Regulations. Both the education, outreach, and awareness efforts and the focused inspections will occur from April 1, 2025, to March 31, 2026.

To help stakeholders achieve compliance during the year-long campaigns, IHSA is highlighting the following resources:
