On construction sites, workers may have to deal with unsanitary toilets and clean-up facilities. Maintaining proper hygiene procedures and facilities on a worksite is an important way to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. It is also required under Ontario health and safety law.
The attached advisory, developed by IHSA in collaboration with the Provincial Building and Construction Trades Council and COCA, reviews the risks of having poor sanitary conditions, suggests ways to prevent or control those risks, and outlines the legal requirements and workplace responsibilities for having proper hygiene practices and clean-up facilities on a construction site. HEALTH AND SAFETY ADVISORY
MOBILE DEVICES ARE A DANGEROUS DISTRACTION ON CONSTRUCTION SITES
There are many hazards associated with using your mobile device on a construction site, especially when operating or working around vehicles and equipment. If you’re using a mobile device on-site, it means that you’re not paying full attention to the task at hand and the hazards that surround you.
Struck-by incidents are a common cause of injury and death on busy worksites with lots of moving vehicles and equipment. By limiting the use of mobile devices, workers will be less distracted and less likely to be struck by moving vehicles and equipment.
In Canada and the United States, struck-by incidents continue to be among the top three causes of injury and fatality on construction sites. Many of these incidents can be attributed to distractions, specifically the distractions caused by using mobile devices. Read More.

Whiteout! Winter driving tips - on and off the job
Source: https://www.workplacesafetynorth.ca/
Motor vehicle incidents in Ontario account for more than 38% of all worker traumatic fatalities
Employees at high risk
Did you know driving is one of the highest-risk activities an employee can undertake – especially in winter? Motor vehicle incidents in Ontario account for more than 38 percent of all worker traumatic fatalities.
This number increases to 45 percent when we include powered industrial vehicles or powered mobile industrial equipment in the workplace, i.e. vehicles used to lift and move material, such as forklifts, pallet trucks, walkie stackers, and scissor lifts.
Unlike a worksite, employers cannot control the types of drivers and vehicles that share the road with their employees. If employers have workers driving from site to site, traveling to a meeting, or even going out on a coffee run, the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board considers them to be occupational drivers. Between 2006 and 2010, the board reported more than 7,000 lost-time injury claims and 149 fatalities involving occupational driving. Click here for the full article.

7 Holiday Safety Concerns in the Workplace
Source: https://safestart.com/
As the winter holidays approach, employees tend to deal with more distractions than usual. Planning dinners, hosting out-of-town family members, purchasing gifts, and figuring out the logistics of other festive activities can easily cause people’s minds to wander when they’re at work. From a health and safety perspective, it’s worth considering how these issues affect workers on the floor, on-site, on the road, or at home. Read More.

How To Protect Against Common Winter Construction Hazards
Source: https://moduloc.ca/
Construction work carries a number of inherent risks – some of which are worsened in the winter months. Winter in Canada brings the added challenge of dealing with snow, ice, and below-freezing temperatures. All of these factors can increase the risk of illness or injury on the job site.
Thankfully, awareness can go a long way to minimizing these risks. We’ve compiled five common winter construction hazards, along with some tips to help you protect yourself and your employees.
- Winter Construction Hazard #1 – Cold Stress
- Winter Construction Hazard #2 – Slip and Fall
- Winter Construction Hazard #3 – Snow Removal
- Winter Construction Hazard #4 – Winter Driving
- Winter Construction Hazard #5 – Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
In addition to these five hazards, winter weather can also cause a dangerous distraction. The discomfort it creates can result in lost concentration or focus on the task at hand, making accidents more likely. Again, simply being aware of the effects of winter weather on your physical and mental state can go a long way to preventing incidents on the job site.

Avoid cotton and goose down to help prevent hypothermia
In Ontario, working outside during the Canadian winter can leave workers susceptible to illnesses like hypothermia or injuries from frostbite. Hypothermia happens when the body’s core temperature drops below what is required for normal metabolism and body functions. Click here for the full article.
