The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) applauds the House of Representatives for passing H.R. 1585, the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2019! NCADV and our allies have been proud to be involved with a Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) reauthorization bill that includes modest enhancements and critical updates to protect the safety and well-being of victims and survivors of domestic violence nationwide. This important bipartisan piece of legislation addresses gaps identified by victims, survivors and the people who work on the ground with them every day.
We especially appreciate Representatives Bass and Fitzpatrick’s bipartisan leadership for their work in hearing the needs of victims and survivors and including provisions to help them find safety and healing through VAWA grant programs. NCADV also thanks Representative Hoyer for his continued staunch support of victims of violence against women. Please take a moment to thank all of them for supporting survivors!
We also appreciate the House and its members for understanding the lethal intersection presented by domestic violence and firearms. Despite attempts from the gun lobby to intimidate lawmakers by scoring them on this vote, we are glad to see most House Representatives rebuffed this opposition and kept the safety of domestic violence victims as a primary concern.
As we commend the House for their passage of H.R. 1585, we look forward to continuing our work with the Senate to similarly pass an equally strong bill.
