NCBC is Proud to Announce
the Natosha Lynne Morton Scholarship Winners
This year the National Consortium of Breast Centers announced the return of the
Natosha Lynne Morton Memorial Scholarship
graciously funded by MagView®
This scholarship provides recognition to a deserving Breast Health professional who best exhibits character, compassion, and
caring in conjunction with providing the best possible care to patients by paying their conference registration
fee to attend the NCoBC 2017 Annual Interdisciplinary Breast Center Conference March 11-15, 2017 in Las
Vegas, NV.
Ms. Morton was a lifelong supporter of Breast Cancer Detection. Under her leadership as Center Director at Houston Northwest Medical Center, the site became the fi
rst Certified Quality Breast Center of
Excellence in the NCBC's NQMBC Program. She was actively involved with numerous charities involving the detection, education,
and treatment of breast cancer patients. After a long struggle, Mrs. Morton succumbed to the very disease she had so passionately fought against.
Here is a little bit about our winner.
"
Kon'nichiwa! Watashi no namae wa Dominique Smith, RTR(M), CN-BI desu.
Excuse the Japanese, but I just returned to Texas a little over year ago after living in Okinawa, Japan for almost three years. My name is Dominique Smith. My husband proudly serves in the United States Army and my children and I had the opportunity to accompany him on his assignment.
I am an ARRT registered Radiologic and Mammography Technologist. Thankfully, I was able to work in my profession at the US Naval Hospital in Okinawa. While in Japan, in add
ition to pe
rforming mammography, I facilitated a support group to serve the unique needs of military members, spouses and government employees living in Okinawa. Now, I am working as a staff technologist at the Breast Center at St. David's Medical Center in Austin, Texas. I recently obtained my Breast Patient Navigator certification. In addition to performing screening, diagnostic and interventional breast procedures, I am also responsible for many of the breast imaging navigation duties. I am currently pursuing a degree in Health Care Management with an eventual goal to be an administrator for a nonprofit/community based organization that provides cancer screenings and care to lower income citizens that do not have adequate access to care. I do not consider what I do a profession, rather my calling. I have always felt compelled to help others and knew I would end up in a service-oriented profession. Promoting women's health, raising awareness for breast cancer and supporting patients are true passions for me."
Dominique was among a group of highly qualified candidates who submitted not only an application highlighting their service in breast care, but also provided us with a minimum of two letters of recommendation from co-workers/supervisors and patients or community members.
One of her patients wrote this about her: "
I met Dominique Smith back in July 2013 when I was diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer while overseas in Okinawa. Far away from family and needing support, she went above and beyond to help me through surgery and radiation treatment.
Dominique made my entire situation bearable and became family through the process. " -

And....
Because we had so many wonderful applicants, and we (NCBC) had a difficult time deciding,
MagView® has graciously agreed to sponsor an additional scholarship!
The additional winner of the Nathosha Lynne Morton Scholarship is
Shannon Strausbaugh, RTR(M), CN-BI. Shannon is a Breast Care Navigator and Mammography Technologist at Hanover Hospital in Hanover, PA, a small rural community in southern Pennsylvania. A little about Shannon...."
I have worked at Hanover Hospital for 17 years, starting as a part time night shift Radiologic Technologist. I trained in Mammography soon after employment and have worked primarily in Mammography for the past 8 years. I became the first Certified Navigator in
Breast Imaging at our hospital through the NCBC in October 2015, 6 months after accepting the Breast Care Navigator position.
My passion has been in breast care for many years, most specifically 10 years ago when my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. Walking the journey beside her and realizing the physical and emotional toll it takes on the patient was humbling. I have since been dedicated to caring for, encouraging and supporting those diagnosed with this all too common disease. My goal is to make it as seamless as possible for the patient. I am always available as a resource for the patient as they journey their way through breast cancer.
I look forward to attending the NCoBC2017 conference to network with other navigators specifically in Imaging as it is a fairly new concept to most organizations. I hope to return with information that will enhance and help grow our current program and support the significance of the breast care navigator in Imaging position to our hospital. I am confident the NCoBC2017 conference will provide me with invaluable information that will assist in the care and survivorship of our breast cancer patients. I very much look forward to attending the conference in March."
Thank you to all who applied and know that you all are very important in helping patients during their journey.
And A Special Thank You to
