President Trump Withholds Tariffs on U.S. Imports from Mexico Covered by USMCA
President Trump posted in social media that after speaking to Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum today that he agreed that Mexico will not be subject to the 25% percent tariffs if the U.S. imports already qualify under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).
“This Agreement is until April 2nd,” Trump posted @realDonaldTrump. “I did this as an accommodation, and out of respect for, President Sheinbaum. Our relationship has been a very good one, and we are working hard, together, on the Border, both in terms of stopping illegal Aliens from entering the United States, and likewise, stopping Fentanyl.”
The 25% tariffs on Mexico, as well as Canada, took effect at 12:01 a.m. ET, March 4.
On March 3, the day after the Mexico and Canada tariffs took effect, the Trump administration also offered the U.S. automotive industry a tariff exemption if they met the requirements for USMCA.
At this time, certain U.S. steel and aluminum imports will be subject to 25% tariffs on March 12.
