"Black History Month is a reminder to all Americans that our country would not be as wealthy and sustainable today if not for the innovations, hard work, intellect, and courage of the Black Americans that came before us. There are so many to give credit to. Just know that for me, because of the innumerable Black folk that dedicated their lives to change, Black History Month re-affirms that I, a proud Black woman, have no excuses not to impact my community, this nation and ultimately the world.
To me, Black History Month is a celebration of how far I’ve come in dispelling the shame around my identity, a season to honor our ancestors and their hidden contributions, and a time to reflect on the work still to be done.
There is no more powerful force than a people steeped in their history and there is no higher cause than to honor the struggle of our ancestors by remembering.
Black is beautiful, Black is excellent, Black is pain, Black is joy and Black is evident. Black is so much deeper than just African American. Black is growing up as one of seventeen children from a dysfunctional family but finding a way to put it back together again. Black is struggling to find our history or trace our roots. Black is the great-granddaughter of Slave Bob (my great-grandfather) who sought a better life for his family. Black is being strong inside while facing defeat."
