NCC, Pittsburgh Public Schools partner
to link students to machining career path
The Pittsburgh Public Schools (PPS) Career and Technical Education program and New Century Careers (NCC) have announced an agreement to support setting criteria to determine eligibility for Advanced Standing in the NCC PA State registered pre-apprenticeship machinist training program, Manufacturing 2000 (M2K). M2K promotes entry-level job readiness for dozens of open positions with regional manufacturing employers.

Upon successful completion of 50 required modules of Tooling U-SME online training and two National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS) credentials, eligible high school students would be admitted to the hands-on portion of the M2K pre-apprenticeship machinist program.

“Partnering with New Century Careers connects our students to an industry based, established machinist training program filling the numerous open family-wage jobs in the region,” said Angela E. Mike, executive director, PPS CTE Division.

NCC congratulates Pittsburgh Chapter NTMA
Apprenticeship Program graduates, competition winner
New Century Careers congratulates all Pittsburgh Chapter NTMA Apprenticeship Program graduates honored on June 21 at the Westmoreland Country Club. Petra Mitchell, Catalyst Connection president and CEO (pictured below) was the keynote speaker. The four-year training program, administered by NCC on behalf of the Pittsburgh Chapter NTMA, provides related instruction for apprentices studying under southwestern Pennsylvania manufacturing companies. Among those graduates are Adam Horn, Michael Sveda, Michael Chartrand, Brandon McCaslin, Lucas Wilson, Jamie Cameron and Terry Cousins, Jr., representing NCC Manufacturing 2000 (M2K) alumni (25 % of this cohort) and former BotsIQ participants (15% of the cohort), demonstrating how M2K and BotsIQ open manufacturing career pathways.

The winners of the Pittsburgh Chapter/MSC Apprentice Competition also were recognized at the banquet. Congratulations to Michael D. Lenhart, first place, (pictured below) and Benjamin L. Brooks, second place, both of Penn State Tool & Die Corporation; and third place, Alex Foust, Hamill Manufacturing Company. Both manufacturers are NCC partner companies.   During the February competition, participants interpreted blueprints and executed one manual lathe and one manual mill project, producing as many of the part features as they could within a maximum of four hours of work per project.
NCC continues to garner funding
for key workforce development programs
The Howard and Nell E. Miller Foundation awarded a $15,000 grant to New Century Careers to provide precision machining training for un/underemployed Southwestern Pennsylvania residents through the MANUFACTURING 2000 (M2K) Pre-Apprenticeship Program. “NCC is grateful for this generous support. M2K offers tuition-free training for job seekers interested in entering the region’s manufacturing industry, which has many open family-sustaining positions,” said Neil Ashbaugh, NCC president and CEO.
The United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania Board of Directors has approved a 2021-22 Impact Fund allocation of $10,010 to New Century Careers for United for Families (Westmoreland): MANUFACTURING 2000 (M2K) Machinist Training expansion into Westmoreland County. The grant letter stated that the funding communicates the importance of NCC’s work with United Way donors and highlights the imperative and unique role the Impact Fund plays in supporting our community. “NCC appreciates this funding and we look forward to continuing to work with United Way as a partner in approaching complex community issues,” said Ashbaugh.
Machinist and apprentice volunteers needed
Earlier this year, New Century Careers received a generous donation from YG-1 that includes 11,000 tools critical to the NCC training, including carbide inserts, drills, end mills, taps, screws, collets and holders. NCC needs machinist and third and fourth year apprentice volunteers to help unpack, inventory and stock the items so they are readily available for training and Job Shop use. Day, evening or weekend hours can be scheduled. Register here for the hours you can join staff to assist with this project and NCC will be in touch to confirm times. Just a few hours can be a big help!
