New Century Careers receives $250,000
Schools-to-Work Grant from State
Governor Tom Wolf has announced that more than $2.8 million has been awarded in Schools-to-Work Program (STWP) grants to support new partnerships between schools, employers, organizations, or associations to create employment and training career paths for students. The programs will operate from June 1, 2021 through December 31, 2023.
New Century Careers is among the grantees, receiving $250,000 to continue to enhance and expand the MANUFACTURING 2000 (M2K) PA State-Registered Pre-Apprenticeship Program in Pittsburgh and Latrobe to meet the needs of un- and under-employed job seekers and the demand from manufacturers for skilled workers. M2K trainees gain technical skills, earn industry-based credentials, and receive job placement assistance — promoting entry-level job readiness for open positions with regional manufacturers.
Governor Wolf said, “These funds will help ensure that Pennsylvania workers obtain the skills and industry-recognized credentials, or college credits needed to create a pipeline of highly-skilled, work -ready employees to meet current and future labor market needs.”
NCC launches Robotics Technician Apprenticeship
As more and more companies in the region invest and deploy robotics and automation solutions, the need for highly skilled technicians to operate and maintain these systems is critical, according to a survey of over 300 small- and medium-sized companies.

That’s why New Century Careers is launching a two-year registered apprenticeship program focused on automation and robotics for the job role robotics technician. Register here for a virtual information session on Tuesday, June 22, at 10 a.m. NCC plans to enroll 10 apprentices in the first cohort expected to start in July.

A grant awarded by Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing, a Manufacturing USA Institute, NCC partnered with Catalyst Connection, Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC), and Tooling-U/SME, an industry leader in online manufacturing training, supported the program development.

Over a year in the making with input from local manufacturers, the program is approved by the Pennsylvania State Apprenticeship Council and formally recognized by the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and the US Department of Labor.

The Robotics Technician Apprenticeship combines theory, classroom, online courses, and hands-on on-the-job training that includes:

  • Classroom and theory instruction through Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC)
  • Tooling-U online training modules
  • Hands-on training at the employer's site to master 80 plus on-the-job competencies.

First evening cohort completes Operation Next
NCC and instructor John Alexander (right) congratulate these trainees who completed the requirements for Operation Next this month! In January, Catalyst Connection opened enrollment in Operation Next, an initiative specifically created for small and mid-sized manufacturers whose businesses have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Catalyst Connection partners with New Century Careers and CCAC West Hills to offer additional opportunities for hands-on, performance-based learning on real manufacturing equipment. There is no cost to participants, thanks to support from LIFT and a grant from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Those interested in this program can contact Mara Peduto
NTMA to honor Class of 2021 apprentices
The Pittsburgh Chapter NTMA will honor this year's Apprenticeship Program graduates and name the winner of the Pittsburgh Chapter/MSC Apprentice Competition on June 21 at the Westmoreland Country Club beginning at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $45 per person. The four-year training program provides related instruction for apprentices studying under southwestern Pennsylvania manufacturing companies. Keynote speaker will be Petra Mitchell, president and CEO, Catalyst Connection.  RSVP online by May 30.
Machinist and apprentice volunteers needed
Earlier this year, New Century Careers received a generous donation from YG-1 that includes 11,000 tools critical to the NCC training, including carbide inserts, drills, end mills, taps, screws, collets and holders. NCC needs machinist and third and fourth year apprentice volunteers to help unpack, inventory and stock the items so they are readily available for training and Job Shop use. Day, evening or weekend hours can be scheduled. Register here for the hours you can join staff to assist with this project and NCC will be in touch to confirm times. Just a few hours can be a big help!
