Millions of U.S. Families Face Economic Uncertainty Despite Reports of a “Healthy Economy”
|
|
National and state level data from the
2019 Prosperity Now Scorecard
shows that millions of US families are just one emergency away from a financial disaster.
An alarming number of families do not have the resources to withstand an economic downturn, which many analysts predict is right around the corner.
According to the Scorecard data, these “liquid asset poor” households don’t even have enough savings to live at the poverty level for three months if their income was interrupted. The data is even worse for people of color, with nearly 57% of households of color being liquid asset poor.

There are a growing number of initiatives to address social determinants of health within and outside of the health care system.
|
As efforts to improve health in the U.S. look past traditional health care systems as the key driver of health and health outcomes, there has been increased recognition that improving health and achieving health equity will require broader approaches that address social, economic, and environmental factors that influence health. Social determinants of health include factors like
socioeconomic status, education, neighborhood and physical environment, employment, and social support networks, as well as access to health care.
This brief provides an overview of these social determinants of health and discusses emerging initiatives to address them.
NCCAA's Healthy Home Initiative is designed to do just that. The $1 Million grant from Blue Cross Blue Shield NC was awarded to 10 agencies serving 56 rural counties in NC. The grant supports the cost of health and safety repairs to improve air quality in the home and/or make the home safer to live in.

T & R - Tools and Resources
- Crosswalk of the CSBG Organizational Standards & Head Start Performance Standards. CAAs that run Head Start programs are tasked with following different, yet overlapping, requirements that apply to the funding they receive under the CSBG and Head Start Act. To help CAAs understand this overlap and leverage requirements, CAPLAW developed a crosswalk showing the connections between the CSBG Organizational Standards. Click here!
- Training & Orientation Tool for Tripartite Boards. This presentation is specifically for tripartite boards of nonprofit CAAs and acts as a guide for training or providing orientations on the board's responsibilities. Click here!
- Resources: Community Action Academy (Moodle) and the Partnership's various online platforms provide Learning Community members with access to evidence-based resources, on-demand videos, publications, self-paced activities and exercises, online peer engagement and MORE!

A Look in the Window
of the lives of low-income families
Participants in our most recent Poverty Simulation (Waynesville) scramble to adjust to their new lives in poverty. Did you know this same training was so impactful and well-received that it was requested there a second time in just four months?
We must talk about about poverty, because people insulated by their own comfort lose sight of it.

The
NC Poverty Simulation Experience
is an interactive professional development tool that captures a month-long experience in the lives of low-income families. So
what's it really like to be poor?
"Poor is a state of being, but it’s also a feeling; an invisible but oppressive mantle you carry around your neck at all times. It’s feeling beaten down, every d.... day, even on “good” days when you don’t notice it as much. It’s the unrelenting stress of putting out proverbial fires, deciding which is more important when you finally get a few bucks: Paying your rent, your utilities, or getting some food? It’s knowing your credit is ruined indefinitely because you can’t afford to repay this or that, or anything at all, really. "
Experience It!
...The Poverty Simulation helps participants gain a better sensitivity to the needs of the poor.
To learn more, email: info@nccaa.net or tel: 919-790-5757.
"Poor people don’t need anybody else to feel sorry for them. What they do need is someone to realize that they’re not poor because they’re lazy or stupid or bad — that
they’re humans, just like anybody else
,
with the same needs and desires and hopes. They need people to donate and lend support to the programs that help them because there are far too many voices scoffing that they’re “just taking advantage.”

Start Your Day with a Cup of NEW Grounds Coffee
|
|
Coffee samples from the "cupping" staff members participated in to select the NEW Grounds blend.
|
|
Sometimes the best indicator for the tone of your day is that first sip of coffee in the morning----at least that's what we believe over here at NCCAA.
That's why we choose to start our day with a cup of NEW Grounds Coffee.
This dark roast is truly a unique blend roasted by Larry's Coffee right here in Raleigh, NC. The notes of smooth milk chocolate, pecan, and red wine were specially selected by staff at NCCAA via a taste test, so you won't find another blend like it. On top of that, this coffee helps fund our NEW Reentry Project efforts, making it a coffee with a great cause. So go ahead, join us and try a cup and see what helps us set the tone for change everyday.
